Help!! Any Band Parents in myLot?

Help, please! My 12 year old has been invited to take band again for 7th grade. I told him if he stuck with it I would buy him a new trombone and he's getting an "A" in Band this year.
My dilemma is this: do I get him a new trombone sight unseen online (this is the option he wants -- paid for and done) or do I go locally and rent a higher quality instrument and end up owning it after the monthly payments? I like the idea of getting him the best I can and paying it off monthly; but my son is right that if he breaks it I am paying for a trombone he can't use. He better not break anything!!
Does anyone play a band instrument and can give advice as well? All serious responses will be gratefully received.

I'm a former band student and would strongley advise you to rent an instrument. You never know what you are going to get. The slide may be sluggish, there could be a problem with the drip valve, or the mouth piece opening. Plus if he decided to stick with it, he would have a great instrument that he could play thru high school. My dad ended up buying me a trompet and trombone. I knew to keep up with them, as that would have been the end of my musical career. Since then I've made many musical accomplishments. All a result of being in 7th grade band. If he values his instrument he will definitely keep up with it. I carried 2 instruments, played football, and was on the math club.

Thanks! I'm glad to know Band enriched your school experience.
Yes, I decided on rent-to-own and he's got a new Yamaha. It's only $31 a month and we'll own it in 3 years. It is the best way to go...and it's not hard to get him to practice because he loves the look of it.
Thanks again. I'm hoping having a good instrument will mean my David has a good Band experience like you did!

Doesn't the band will provide individual member their instrument. Then, we can borrow from the band by sign-out and in. I am saxophone player in the band for 12 year but did not buy one coz it is pretty expensive. Your sons is right, having an instrument need maintenance stuff as well. For example, saxophone need to buy reeds, pads and oil etc. Whether you own a new one or rent, it is equally expensive.

I would get one new if I was you. That's the way my mom did for my sister and me, and if my son (he's only 15 months old, so we have a LONG way to go still) wants to be in band when he gets bigger, I will do the same thing.
The problem with getting one online is that you don't know what it looks like, or SMELLS like. Those things can get pretty stinky if you don't clean them like you should. And who wants to clean out a bunch of mold that is from someone else's spit? ICK! I played trombone, and apparently didn't clean it all that well last time I played it. My sister got it out to play it recently (it's sat for about five years) and she said she really had to clean it good because it stunk and was kind of nasty. She did get it cleaned back up, but it took a while. And it was gross enough dealing with her sister's spit. I know I wouldn't want to do it with some stranger's...

New it is! We rented from the school this year and that trombone WAS yuckky like you describe.
Band Kid gets a new trombone this summer that we will own when I get it paid off.
Your help is much appreciated; good thing you know what to do in elleven more years for your Band Kid too, huh? (smiles)

I would go and rent one. I bought one instrument off ebay and it ended up being not what we expected at all. I'm not blaming ebay or the seller, it was just that we didn't know all the fine details to look for that ended up being important.
Also, if you rent from the store, they will probably have a warranty if anything does happen.
He will love band and you'll love being a band parent. All 5 of my kids were in band and my youngest son still is. It seems all the band kids become really good friends and to be in band requires a lot more work then anyone ever gives them credit for. But, they learn so much, I'd encourage him to be in it and to continue as long as he likes it.

I'm glad I asked! Yay, an experienced Band Parent. You're just what I asked for, Sherry.
Sorry that you had a bad time with the instrument -- that's exactly what I'm trying to avoid. Hubby is going to the school today to get the rent-to-own info. We'll be going the monthly payment route for a higher quality trombone.
Thank you very much for helping me decide on the right thing to do!

Hi! I have been playing trombone for some years now, and would never buy a trombone unseen as someones first instrument. Maby you can do it later if you for example would like a second for some reason. But the risk that it's not a good trombone is to big I think! It's easy to loose the intrest in playing if you got a bad trombon...

Hi! Welcome to myLot!
Yes, that is a very good reason. I did consider that -- so we are renting to own a new Yamaha. He's very happy with it and it's identical to the one one of his good friends has (we bought a padded carrying strap so that is the difference). My boy has hardly been home all summer so having a boy to put on the mouthpiece end of the trombone has been the situation. But that's a happy thing!
I'm looking forward to his making a lot of progress in his music studies this year. He took band because it doesn't involve any writing and suprisingly enough is quite good at it.
Thanks very much for your insight!

I think you better look for a used quality but cheap trombone on ebay, there are lot of it. It lessen your worries of breaking it up, besides, it can be played for long as soon as your child get in higher grade. Good Luck!
