What do you do with the ends of the loaf of bread.. commonly called heels?

I save them, put the first one back in till the loaf is done, then give one each to my cats. They love people food.. even eat asparagus and watermelon.

Feed the wild things! - bird feeder
We usually break up the heels and stale bread and put them in our bird feeder. In winter we also cover whole slices with peanut butter and seeds and hang them in the trees for the squirrels as well as the birds.

Wow, that is really weird, and cool that your cats eat that kind of food. My cat is a snob and will not even drink milk. The only people food she eats is Tuna. Once in a while she will eat a little rice or egg mixed in her food - but that's rare too. I give the heel to the ducks in the lake behind my townhome.

I usually throw them away. Sometimes my son will get them out the bag and eat them.

Sometimes I'll go ahead and use them as i regularly would for a sandwich for my husband. Sometimes I'll make breadcrumbs from them and use them in a casserole or as slices in a strata.

Surprisingly, my daughter loves to eat them, ever since she was young. So I do not need to throw them away;it is put to good use:)

It depends what kind of bread they are from. If they are from a Scottish plain loaf then i toast them and eat them, if their just from normal bread the birds get them.

We have some ducks that hang around in our yard during the summer, so we always save the heels and then tear them up and toss them out to the ducks when they come around. They seem to get really exicted over the bread. lol

I usually eat the one from the open end as soon as possible, becuase i love the 'end bits' (i use a non-technical term for them lol) the most out of thw whole loaf! I will also try to eat the one from the other end too.

I grew up in a family where everyone loved the crust. The first to open the bread packet gets to eat the crust or ends of the bread loaf, our older brother always bullied his way into getting them most of the time... Now I have children and a husband, they dont care for the crust at all, so I get to eat the crust on my own, without a fight LOL...
