Your child drops their pacifier. You pick it up right after it hits the floor. Do you give it back to your child or do you wash it off first?

I always wash it first. I would keep an extra one in the diaper bag for just in case this happen and I was no where near a place to wash it off. If you don't you might as well feed your child dog poop because all the stuff people carry on the bottom of their shoes will be passed on to that pacifier once it hits the ground.

ugh! i have seen a lot of parents doing that, or even licking the pacifier clean themselves and then giving back to the child! you should always wash it off! not only because of germs and misc debris that come from the floor/ground, but even the human mouth is pretty germ ridden! just about everybody nowadays carries around a bottle of water..so stop and rinse the pacifier off!

I totally agree with fluffyfrog - catching it in time to clean it is sometimes easier said than done! When my son was still using his paci I usually at least rinced it off after he dropped it, but again, sometimes that was easier said than done.

i would wash it off first, but i used the chains you can buy to keep them on the child and not fall on the ground. they had some really neat ones in germany

my daughter never used a pacifier. but if that happens, i would wash it first before i give it back to her. or better yet, if i have a spare pacifier, i'd give her that instead.

If it hits the floor or the ground I wash it first. If it falls on a blanket, I will give it back to him.

I don't have children but as a doctor I recommend you to wash first.

my daughter was very dependant on one for along time and I washed it EACH AND EVERY time she dropped it. Cleaning it is better then your baby getting thrush.

I'm sure she does when I am not watching but what i was saying is EVERYTIME that I see it happen it gets washed. If your child is outside and they drop it in the dirt are you actually saying you won't wash it???

Yuck! I always washed it before I would give it back to my child. You never know what nasty stuff jumped onto that thing before you had a chance to clean it. You never know what you can pick up off the ground now a days. :)

I like to take the pacifiers away when my kids are little so I dont currently have any using one, but I will admit to doing this, but only when it lands with the nipple up and off the ground. If the nipple is touching the ground or sideways, I wash it. Usually I wash it anyways, but a couple of times it's landed "up" and I didn't wash it, gross I know! I can admit thats discusting. And I will also admit to eating things I've dropped on the floor at home, YUCK

If we were out, I always had the chain for the pacifier locked on my daughter's cloth when she was 1 or 2 year old, and we seldom got it on the ground, and if occisionally happen I cleaned it before put it back. I'm definitely sure about this.

When my daughter was younger and not so mobile I used to clean the dummy (pacifier) every time she dropped it but now it is not so easy as she is very mobile and constantly spits it out,now it is more important for me to keep the floors clean LOL I no longer wash the dummy every time it hits the floor, my daughter is 7 months old now.

Mine never took to the pacifier, but she did have a habit of dropping her bottle on the ground and inevitably the nipple on the bottle would hit the ground. Of course, I'm a clean freak, so I always washed it off. I've heard of that thing where people just pop the pacifier in their mouth to clean it off. I read an article where they said that the saliva and digestive juices in the mouth can actaully corode the baby's teeth. So, I never tried to do that. Hope that helps.
