Have no idea what to buy an old neighbour, who is turning 90 for this occasion. We have not seen him for a long time, but any ideas please!

Helping him out certificates. Food certificates, clothing certificates, and Making a homemade, Spending time with him certificates. They love it when they have company come once in awhile to sit and talk to about anything :) ... I have not met an elderly person yet who does not enjoy having someone to talk to once in awhile. If you have children, and if they love to tell stories, bring your family over for some story times.. if he is interested in that. Give your presence, instead of presents :) - DNatureofDTrain

These are great ideas. I get lonely sometimes during the day when my kids are at school, so I bet the elderly get lonely too. Time is often the best gift. I remember my husband's grandmother used to be thrilled when we'd spend every Monday night playing cards with her. It was very enjoyable for us because we loved listening to her stories about how things were when she was growing up and all the things she had seen in her lifetime. :-)

Not sure if you are being sarcastic or have a morbid sense of humour but hope it would be neither!

Hmm this is a tough one, do you know anything about the guys personality? I was gonna suggest getting him a goodie basket or making him some baked goods but with older people they often choose not to or cannot eat such foods due to health reasons. Well I know that my grandfather really enjoys working in crossworld puzzle books, maybe he would enjoy that?? Or what about a nice bird feeder for his yard, I know a lot of older people enjoy watching nature.

Older people love food and eating out. So maybe some homemade treats, or a covered dish. Perhaps a gift certificate to a resturant, if he goes out. Does he have a dvd? You can get him a movie.

What about a phone card for him to keep in touch with family members? Oh I just saw the date, by now he is probably 90 years and two months old lol

Even though this is some time ago now caramello, with some of our older friends we find that they appreciate something nice in the good line, but the taste should not be too sharp. I found it relatively easy to make up a basket of assorted goodies I knew they would enjoy or else share with visitors. The other thing is to give him some "gift vouchers" along the lines of visiting him once fortnight, cooking him a meal once a month or something like that.

Ask him what his favorite foods or homebaked goods he likes and make him some of his favorite things. Invite him to your home for dinner. Does he live alone? This would be wonderful for him if he could get out to visit people. You say you haven't seen him for a long time. Maybe you should take time to visit him. Giving the gift of your time is one that is priceless. : )

I agree with ossie. Cook him a nice little meal or a small hamper would be nice. Just the visit is often appreciated by the eldrely.

Hey caramello, I like elusivebutterfly's response, think thats hitting down the right track. They are the sort of things I would do for someone, more of a thoughtful gesture than a gift. But saying that a mixed basket would be lovely too. Good luck, keep us posted. Have a great day you!!!

My old neighbour die this year, but like all old people she was affraid of darkness. Simple LCD flashlight (no battery needed)in case of emergency is always a good gift.

When my mother-in-law was around that age, she enjoyed food items. We often gave her a food basket for her birthday or Christmas. Another good gift is an afghan or throw of some kind to keep the chill off when sitting in a chair.

I don't know if this man is able to get out, but if he can, gift certificates for a restaurant might be a nice idea. I have an elderly neighbor who does little things for me, like bringing in my garbage cans when I'm at work, etc. He goes out to Tim Horton's every single morning to have coffee and a doughnut with his friends, so I give him gift certificates for Tim Horton's on occasions. Homemade cookies or candy are always a great idea, too. I don't know of an elderly person alive who doesn't like sweets! (unless he's a diabetic, of course!).
