Recently, a new male officemate told me that i am pretty, but he said it merely just as a compliment. I was thrown offguard at his sudden remark and i didnt know how to react so i just passed it off as a joke and i think he got offended.
What is actually the proper way of handling compliments given to you? How do you handle them?

I suggest to just smile and say thank you and change the subject right away without being obvious. My boss before has a crush on me and he always gives me compliments. The good thing is we are good friends, but of course at first I do get really uncomfortable, mostly because he's my boss. I suggest not to disagree or pass it off as a joke, they say too much humility sometimes is not good.

I'm nearly 50 and it shows so I don't get compliments too often but whenever I have in the past, I have to say that I blushed furiously and stuttered a thanks.
I think that thanking the person casually might be the best way of handling it and then perhaps changing the subject to a more general topic eg: weather, news.

Well if you think that he's telling the truth, then you say thank you and be yourself.
Stay cool and stay sweet to prepare another complements coming your way.

I have never been good at taking compliments. I used to just get really embarrassed. Now I still get embarrassed but I do manage to say thank you. The person giving the compliment is not usually trying to make you feel uncomfortable. Most people are sincere and want you to feel good.
