Drivers Training...Should it be Mandatory?

I'm not sure how things work in other countires, but here in Canada "Drivers Training" is only an option for those wishing to get a drivers licence (here it's called a G2). Drivers training does offer benefits for those getting a licence (such as lower insurance and the ability to get your licence faster) but it's not mandatory.
How do things work in your country? Do you agree with it? Should "Drivers Training" be mandatory for people wanting their licences? Why or why not?

here in the uk it is compulsory to take a theory and a practical driving test before you are allowed to drive a car. I think it should be like this everywhere as it makes driving safer. If you get caught driving without a licence in this country you are banned from driving.

I live in Michigan, and Drivers training is only mandatory if you want to get your drivers licence before the age of 18. Once you turn 18, you no longer have to pass the drivers traning courses, you just have to pass the writen test, and a driving test.
I don't think that it should be mandatory unless the cost is reduced so that people can afford it. It is much too expensive for many people, and would prohibit some from being able to get their licenses.

It's not mandatory in the US but a lot of the high schools in Chicago offer it. There was one school that it was required for graduation, whether you got your license or not. I think in Illinois if you want your license before you turn 18 you have to take Driver's Ed at a high school (not a driving school).
I took it the month I turned 16 and did the "driving" portion over Christmas break and got my learner's permit and got my license a couple months later. Because I passed the classes with a B average I didn't have to take the test at the DMV which was great. I just walked in, gave them my permit and receipt (that I paid and took the class), my grade sheets and got my picture taken and left.

In the US, it varies by State. In Maryland, drivers education is mandatory in order to get your drivers license, but they've taken drivers education out of our school system. The rules are very strict for anyone obtaining a license, not just kids. We have a Rookie Driver program that applys to anyone getting a license for the first time. Not only do you have to take a driving class, but you must have your learners permit (which allows you to drive with the supervision of a licensed driver) for something like 6 months before you can take the test for your license.
I think it's a good idea for everyone to learn the "proper" way to drive.

I do not think that the driver's training would be compulsary anywhere. The logic is simple: some people can learn all by themselves, others need formal instructions.
But one has to undergo test before one is given a driver's license. I think it is mandatory everywhere.
I do not think it would be a good idea to make driver's training compulsary. But I feel it should be compulsary to teach traffic rules to everyone. May be this can be done in a primary school.

Here in the USA many schools are implementing driver's education for high school students before they can test and obtain their license. I'm not sure how each individual state handles it but I know in Connecticut they passed a law that all new drivers under the age of 18 are restricted as to when they can drive and who/how many can be in the car with them for at least the first 6 months. I think it's a great idea to have young people take driver's education and to impose restrictions until they have some experience driving and hopefully will have less accidents because of it. I was in college when I began driving and skipped going to driving school because I didn't have the money then. I think being a little older and waited that much longer for it I was ready and responsbile. I took to it right away, driving on the interstate my second time behind the wheel.

I don't think it should be mandatory if you don't want to or need to drive. Here in California, most students take drivers training class in high school. Then there's a long written test and a driving test you have to take at the department of motor vehicles to get your drivers license.
Now when I moved to Illinois for awhile and already had my California drivers license, I had to take a written test, but it was sooooooooooooo much easier then the written test in California I could hardly believe it.
I do think drivers training should be mandatory for anyone who's going to be driving on the same roads I'm driving on.

Hello,jshean20,drivers training is very important to help the drivers to have more experience on the roads and reduce the chance of accidents. In Australia,we have to pass a theory test to get a learner license first, ans we will have 50 hours training and then we will have the provision 1 license test within a year after getting the learner license, then we need to get a provisional 2 license after 1 year and finally we get the full license after passing one more theory test.

I think the graduated licensing is a good idea, just wish it weren't so damned expensive. It seems like the government has turned it into their new cash cow.. to get your driver's license from beginning to end it will cost just over $300 at minimum.
