Ok..this will spark some contraversy..but why ..why do women have to do so much

Why do women have to paint their face.. make up..to be able to appear in public..
Men do not have to wake up and put paints and colors on their faces..so why have women become the ones who have to do this..
Why does this amount of make up make such a difference..
I have seen all kinds of this ..Some women have it light and others have it set on so heavily that it looks like a mask..
What is it ..what law..that says women you have to do this to be pretty ..? Who started this trend and why???
I know women in general would not go out of the house without spending time .hours..putting on this..
Is it necessary or a trend that women can not break away from?
Finally how much money do you spend on what you put on your face??????

Why do women love make-up? Blame estrogen. After menopause a woman can feel relaxed without it unless she has to look her best at work or social events.
Why do women have to wear it? Competition, I guess. And if you were a personnel ofcr, who'd seem more motivated on the job - a slob or someone who looks sleek and slick?

I had to wait till I stopped laughing..please excuse me..I am on the onslaught of menopause ..and I don't feel any need to put on the make up..or cosmetics..this is not an estrogen thing..LOL..it's a matter of what you have been instilled to believe.;)+

Though we share different opinions..I don't condemn those who feel they can't go without it...When we appear before God..we wont have to put that stuff on;)+

Let me add some fire to the controversy you are trying to work up :). Women make their own choices to do so.
I have seen females literally abuse their faces with lipstick and makeup just to make sure that they look good and attractive. Believe me, from my personal perspective I get more attracted to females who do not have any makeup on their faces or have very little!! Too much makeup puts me off!!
Apart from the money perspective, there are other subtle things which people miss. Makeup does harm your skin. Whatever this cosmetic industry would like you to believe, the skin does get affected by the makeup you put. Also the excess lipstick which actually gets consumed with food and drink is also not good. In the good old days, when they did not use to use makeups, most females used to age gracefully, now the moment a woman crosses 40, the wrinkles on her face starts showing up real bad. This leads them to spend more time in the parlour and so on!!
Come on... All animals try to attract mates by showing off that is ok... But, they show off natural stuff and don't polish or varnish themselves to look attractive.
How's that for an inflamatory answer? Hoping to get a lot of kudos and brickbats as replies :)
Cheers!
Ram

I never saw it that way: abusing..but I guess with realization of what it all can do to your skin and body..yes maybe...
It is awful that women have to feel they are pretty only when they paint over what God has given them;)+

Women don't have to put makeup on, it is just something that many get in the habit of doing. I quit wearing makeup years ago. I don't own any makeup now and if I do wear it on a special occasion. I'll borrow my daughter's eye liner and lipstick, but that is it. I think women look better without makeup.

it isn't a "law" it is a choice to do this and for me it makes me feel good and to add color to my white complection and it makes me feel better about my selfesteem. I mean there are people out there that do not know how to add makeup properly, but that is their choice on how to apply it. I know men don't have to and that is a great thing about being a woman because we can add something so simple and it makes such a difference.

So your self-esteem is affected by what you put on? I wonder why ..Don't your self-esteem is something within and has to be handled there? I mean if you realize how beautiful God made you ..that is good self esteem..if you need to add to it that means you are not happy with how you look ..you feel your beauty is inadequate?

Sorry..I am not open minded to that..I don't agree that painting my face will make me feel better about myself..Neither do I paint my nails or put on jewelry etc.. I am very simple and believe that what is more important is not how you look on the outside..although you must be clean..but what you are in the insided..To do something like you say would be a compelte contradiction of my beliefs and make me a hyprocrite
As I say..If it makes you happy great..It don't make you any better a person inside however...+

Yes it does have to do with self esteem, it is like putting on a cute outfit or doing something different with your hair. You speak a lot about "god" which is great, but do you shave your legs and do things to yourself that make you feel good about yourself, such as painting your nails or even gardening or any hobby that you might enjoy because it makes you happy and helps with your self esteem and actually there are men out there that do wear makeup, such as actors and it is for their appearence and for mine and it does not cover up your beauty it is to enhance your beauty. I just feel you are just totally against this subject and should be a little more open minded about this subject. Everyone is different and this is how "god" made us and to take care of ourselves and to love life is to do those little things such as adding makeup to make us feel great and that just makes us unique!

well here is a woman who never wears make up at all. I honestly dont like the feel of it and find it reprehensible that i am expected to conform to their ideas of what is atractive. Selling stuff and telling women they need gunk on their faces is just another example of the exploitation that is capitalism
blessed be

Cute posting. My first thought was because men and women are made different. Men tend to look at the surface to be stimulated and women look for the emotional attachment. Also...men age much better than women, and maybe we try to keep up with them. Another thought...in nature, like birds...it is the male who has the more colorful plumage...the ones who strut their stuff...it makes a funny mind picture to think of our men being the "pretty" ones.

But who is the determining factor in what is "pretty"? I mean does make up make you look more pretty ..perhaps if you like that artifilial masky look then yes it does.I simply can't get into it;)+

I do put makeup on but not all the time. I usually put some on when I'm going to work or attending a function/party. And when I do, I try to make it look as natural as possible. I don't like heavy makeup. It makes me look like a different person.
Other than those times, I don't bother.

dear littlefranciscan, i agree with your opinion. And in India, it is not only the face make up, women do host of the household chores apart from a job, if she is into one. hence it is a double/triple burden of work on women folk.

I don't know who made the rule, but I grew up to be a very huge rule breaker! I did wear make up for a while in high school, but I don't anymore. My dad is the one who started me out on this. When I was a teen and experimenting with make up and hair styles, my dad asked me one day- why would you want to cover up such a pretty face, and spend all that money on getting your hair done when you look very pretty without it? So, I very rarely wear any makeup and I very rarely curl my hair. I am not vain, I know that I am not beautiful, but, my husband loves me just the way I am. If I happen to wear makeup for a special occasion, he always asks me why I painted my face!

I have never understood the NEED to wear make-up. I will go out with or without it. I also think that wearing so much that you take on a totally different look is sad. Makeup is designed to enhance one's features, not disguise them. If and when I wear make-up, I use a little eyeliner and neutral (browns) eye shadow and a light lipstick. I do advocate caring for the skin with moisturizers and such, but not covering up what you have been given.

I feel that putting on makeup is a personal choice and not a mandate. I personally don't use makeup and it has not kept me from getting boyfriends or jobs. But I know many women who say they feel 'naked' without their makeup. My sister puts on makeup to go shopping, to work, to the doctor. I just have never felt the need.
