Customer Service ---or better yet, lack of...

Is it just me or is customer service a thing of the past. I can't seem to get a greeting or a nice closing comment just about every where I go. I used to work in the service industry and it was required for me to greet every customer with a genuinely pleasant comment letting them know that I was truly glad they were there. I did this no matter what mood I was in. Basically, I left my mood at the door and become "cheerful and smiling" the second I clocked in. When a customer left, I acknowledged them again and made sure they were invited back.
We went out of our way to keep the customer happy.
Now, it seems that people are doing the least amount of work they can get by with. I have had more food service orders just handed to me without any words said. I have even been asked "what do you want?" That is incredibly rude.
Is it just me, or is everyone feeling this way?

I agree with you, I think good customer service is very lacking these days. I have even had people arguing with me over the phone when they know Im in the right and its their mistake - whatever happened to "the customer is always right"? I can put up with many things in life, but bad service is one of those things I hate and I will always do something about. It doesnt cost anything to smile and be courteous and unfortunately, i think it is just a reflection of the state the whole world is in today.
