We all know that smoking is injurious to health.Even such warnings are printed on the cigarette packets. But knowing the truth still people smoke.
WHO(World Health Organisation)has estimated that 1.1 billion people are smokers which maens roughly one third of world's adults.
Why do so many people persist in a habit that is deadly? If you are a smoker can you quit smoking?

There are a lot of things bad for your health. Everyday you walk out of your door, you put yourself in danger. I don't know if I could quit, but I don't want to, not at this point so it really doesn't matter if I could.
If ssmoking causes lung cancer and one third of all adults smoke, why don't one third of the world have lung cancer?
There is a lot of things that can cause illnesses, but I don't see people harping about that.

Hi thanks for the reply. The sad thing is that people who smoke suffer less than those don't smoke. The problem is that people who smoke do not care the society and people around them.I have no problem with smokers. At least keep this habit within a boundary. Anytime we can die.Maybe we will die in an accident or any other reason but at least we don't want to suffer in bed.

Yes, I'm a smoker and yes, I can quit when I want to, IF I want to. I have seen evidence of smokers living into their centenary year, and their nineties, so who's to say that the WHO statistics are right? Who is to say that they based them on the World population as a whole, rather than hospital statistics? How many people die from other illnesses, such as asthma, which is greatly caused by car fumes? How many people actually die from AIDS, which is nothing to do with smoking? How many people die from BSE, which is caused by infected beef and how many people die from Meningitis?
I'm sick of the holier than thou who don't like smoking, telling me how bad it is for me. I have smoked for almost fifty years, with a period of six and a half years in between, smoke free. I have seen people die from cancer, who don't smoke, heart disease, respiratory problems and everything else, so it makes me angry when people blame these diseases on smoking. I will NOT be bullied by the Government or any Health Department into giving up. I will give up when I feel I want to give up and exercise my rights to freedom of choice.
He he he... had you going, didn't it? In fact, I am in the midst of giving up smoking. Not because of all the fussing that's going on because that only makes me all the more determined to carry on, but because of my pocket. I'm using herbs to quell the anxiety of giving up and they work well. So, I was speaking from other smokers' points of view there. There is far too much bullying going on, and I believe the general non-smoking public are being brainwashed into siding with governmental legislation and health reports against the smokers. This, I regard as discrimination. Not on, I'm afraid.
Brightest Blessings for a great day, and sorry I had to get on my soap box about this but it's time some people stopped to listen to the smokers. :-)

Hi thanks for the reply.May be you are right. But one thing I know that there is a risk of high cancer and other diseases for passive smokers. You can say that people die from cancer who even don't smoke. But still it has a negative impact on the population. There are chances of being sick from smoking no matter if you are a direct smoker or passive.

well, i know that it is a very costly and deadly habit as well... but the sad thing is once somebody gets addicted to it, it is hard for them to give up... it takes strong will and determination for them to be able to quit... and most of them are able to quit for a period of time and then smoke again because they just can't resist the temptation...

Yes they know about the warnings, it is just that the nicotine is very addictive, I heard, more than heroin. I have never taken up the habit (the smell, the odor --not the badness or that one would get lung cancer) but my sister-in-law tried to quit several times over thirty years before she succeeded. However short of locking the person in a cell until the addiction passes (how long that would be), there should be a way to stop people from smoking.

I have been smoking for almost 15 years...its started out as something i just wanted to try out and now i can't really quit even if i wanted to. yes it's true, that despite the warnings on the packs..people still smoke. it is really a hard habit to stop. maybe it's just that we have the mentality of "living life o the fullest" or "enjoy it while it lasts".

I smoke and I know that it is not good for my health, but neither is the air we breathe these days. I don't think smoking is any worse than that as of right now. I addicted to nicotine and I really enjoy smoking is why I am still smoking. I could quit smoking if I had the desire too but I don't have a desire to right now.
