Potatoes or Rice?

Which one do you prefer as carbohydrates provider? Do you eat at least one of them everyday? In my country it's a tradition to eat rice daily. Even when we have potatoes during our meals, we also eat rice. I love both though!

Interesting... It sounds strange to me to hear people don't eat rice everyday, because it's the most common thing around here! :) Thanks for sharing!

I try to eat complex carbs or as the guideline goes - if it is white-don't eat it. When I do eat rice, I try to eat brown rice. I think right now a lot of people are cutting back on carbs.

You're right, a lot of people are doing it. But here we mostly eat the white. I think it's the worst one, huh? Even the parboiled is better.

Rice is the main item for our lunch. I think it is because we live in the tropical belt. Potatoes too are their. Another major one is coconut. We use coconut for almost all dishes. Thank you Laridbz.

Peel the cover and take out the shell. Then break the shell and the white portion inside it is tasty and we have instrument - coconut scraper - in all houses here. Scrap them and mixing with chilly, salt etc grind them and use in in cooking. The tender coconut water too is delicious and rich with glucose. The name of our land too is Keralam means 'land of coconuts' (Kera = coconut, alam = land). We use each and every part of the tree for different purposes. For us no part of a coconut tree can be thrown away. Coconut gives us the local liq*r called toddy. We consider coconut as 'Kalpavriksha' = divine tree which meets all our needs. I know in Brazil too there are plenty of coconut trees, but is of less use for you. Thank you..

That's really interesting... And yes, we have loads of coconut trees, but as you said, we don't use it as you do. Thanks again, dear!

I myself don't eat a lot of potatoes , I eat rice maybe once a week , I also make rice pudding sometimes plain and sometimes with dried fruit in it , My son likes both but my hubby prefers potatoes I think it is just a matter of what you are brought up to eat . My Mum was a good cook and cooked different things , but my hubbys mum couldn't cook at all so it was easier for her to make potatoes xx

We eat rice regularly though that is not the only thing we eat. We also eat wheat bread in equal or more quantity. We make curry out of potatoes and eat it with rice or bread. In fact potatoes are cooked in many a ways and with several other vegetables and meats. Some people even like to make their bread by stuffing it with boiled potatoes.

If you have any liking for spices, you would surely like curries. Look around in your departmental stores, ready to eat curries may be available in your place. Just open the packet and follow the directions and there you have the curry!

You know, curry is something I'm very curious about. It's not common at all in my country, but I have a guess I'd love it! :) Thanks for sharing, Norstar!

I prefer to eat rice since for me, it is easier to cook rice than potatoes. Also, if I eat potatoes especially boiled ones, I have a tendency to put toppings like cheese, bacon, butter, etc. which is not helpful for keeping my weigh down and controlling my diabetis.

I love them both too. If I had to pick I'd have to go with potatoes. Although I probably eat more rice. LOL But hey, being an Irish gal I have to go with my potatoes.

I imagined so. You're from Italy, right? Usually people from the USA really eat this sort of stuff everyday, and they know it's not good for them. But anyway, when it's part of the culture, it's something difficult to change!

For me, I have rice practically everyday too. Potatoes would be on the rarer side. We have them in some dishes, not counting the french fries in the occasional fast food meals I eat. I don't see any need to worry about taking in carbohydrates though. I thought everyone is trying to cut down on them. :P

Most people are cutting down indeed, and I was trying to reduce! But you seem to need a little more, from what you posted on my other topic! :D

I like them both. My husband, however, does not care for rice, so I don't fix it very often. Both can be prepared in so many different ways, and I like variety. I think rice is better for you than potatoes. Not as much starch.

I love both too but I prefer rice because I think it lasts longer in the stomach and I won't feel hungry too frequently. But I am really in love with marsh potato and french fries, I could eat those all day. I think if I rely on potato as my carbohydrates provider, I would definitely gain a bunch of weight because I tend to consume more amount when it comes to potato.

I prefer rice over potatoes. I rarely ever eat potatoes, except when they're in soup or occasionally when they're mashed. Rice (brown rice especially), I would say, I eat it about once a week, maybe even less frequently. I get most of my carbs from bread, I think.
