Are you afraid of the dark?

It's very common for children to be afraid of dark places. But some children can't overcome it, and take this fear until adult age. It happened to me. I think I'm more afraid now than when I was a child actually. I've heard it's related to fearing the unknown, but I don't really know if it's true. Were you afraid of the dark when you were a child? Do you still fear it? If yes, do you have a motive to fear it or, like me, you don't know where it came from? Any tips about how to overcome it?

I actually like the dark. I think when I was little I used to be scared of it, but now I like it.

i guess most of us when we were still kids have this fear of being in the dark especially when left alone. it's natural. good thing is, this fear lessens as we grow old. maybe because we learn that there is nothing much to fear in the dark. even if at times we are, atleast, not as scared as we used to be back then.

There was a time, when I was about 13 or 14, that I also used to like it. I was afraid as a child, lost the fear around this age and then it came back. I don't know the reason, it just did... Well, thanks for replying, Sherry!

when i was a child, yup. i am scared of the dark. i don't want to be left inside my room alone and lights are being switched of. there were always something in my mind to be scared of.. the scary tales i heard before. but now, i am no longer scared at all. i can sleep while lights are off. when there's a surprise blackout and it's nighttime, i don't scream like others do. i am not anymore scared of the dark.... and i am glad about it.

I can sleep with the lights off, yes. Even because I usually don't take much time to sleep. When there's a blackout and I have people with me, I think it's fun (if electricity doesn't take forever to come back). If I'm alone... Well, then I'll probably lay down, close my eyes and wait for it to go away.

As a child it wasn't the dark that frightened me it was thunder and lightening, especially at night, I would lie there dreading the flashing and the horrific noise you had when the thunder struck. I used to rush into my parents room, it scared the hell out of me. Even at 36 I still have an irrational fear of thunder and lightening and will put the covers over my head!

My granny is 77 and she still fears thunders, lightnings and wind! It's something we totally can't control, I think. Well, I don't fear any of these things, but I so understand you! :)

I don't mind the dark at all. I think sometimes you can creep yourself out by listening intently and hearing so many things just because you can't see but for the most part the dark doesn't bother me at all. I'm not sure how to get over the fear other then to realize that there's nothing there in the dark that can't be there in the light?!

But the thing is, I already KNOW there's nothing different there. I simply fear it. I think it's just like some people with roaches, right? We know they won't kill us, but they're awful anyway! ;)

Yes. When I was a kid stories of fairies and ghosts made me fear the dark and night. Now I am 54 but I just didn't made fear to my kids, instead taught them to love both light and dark. LOL

Unlike you, I've never had a motive to fear the dark. I also think it's not a good think to scare children like that, but no-one had ever done this to me. I think it's an inbreed fear or something! :) Thanks for your response!

I was terrified of the dark as a child and that fear has stayed with me up till now. I don´t think it is a fear of the unknown, more like a fear of what you can´t see, but worry is there! As children, we imagine monsters and things. As adults we imagine far more real things like rapists and murderers. So it isn´t exactly unknown, is it? My fear comes from an overactive imagination. I read too much as a child. lol.

I don't imagine rapists or murderers. I'm still at the "monster" phase actually. Hahaha! Not exactly, but ghosts maybe. Who knows? Thanks for sharing, GuateMom!

I wasn't afraid of the dark and I am not afraid of the dark. I guess it's in my blood *laughs*. Indeed, I love the dark, I love the stars and moon! I love the freedom and the feeling of ending of a day the dark gives me. When I was little, I tended to wait for the dark to come, because then I could get in my bed and start dreaming of my own imaginary world (now I must sound crazy to you). I guess it was because of my imaginary world, I always wait for the dark to come and it excites me! I guess this is why I never get scared by the darkness.
