People up north probably doen't know what a love bug is as I was told they just live in the south. These are nasty, nasty bugs that swarm all over down here in florida. You see cars all the time with smashed love bugs. people have to constantly hose their cars down or take them to the car wash cause these nasty critters secrete an acid upon death which literally eats away at the car paint.I have been here for 2 years and have never seen the problem as bad as it is this year.

They are around all summer but but this spring they were really super bad.YOu would drive down the road and your car would be swarmed with them.Usually I don't see them that much.I think it may have something to do with the fact that we were so dry then we got a lot of rain in two days then went back to dry again. They aren't as abad as they were a couple of days ago, thank God!

When I lived in Miami...I remember those nasty little bugs...I have lived in alot of states but have never ran into them again...I am not sure where they come from or why they are so prevalent in Florida...you are right about them eating the paint right off of your car if it is not kept inside of a garage...

Sorry,Tina.O'm so absent minded, I posted my comment without finishing it lol. Anyway,I was saying I had to keep taking my car to the car wash to wash them off so it wouldn't eat the paint

I have never in my life heard of such a bug. At first I thought you were having us on!!
Will insect spray kill them? What are their natural predators?
They sound revolting.

I don't blame ya.I can fully understand why you would think that.I had never even heard of them til we moved here and my brother told me.I dont' think regualar bug spray will kill them and they certainly are revolting. You should see how hard it is to clean them off the car!

Goshhhhh YUCK that is one of the things I hate about florida in the summer, its buggy as hell. Those flying palmetto and roaches is enough, now your telling me about a paint eating love bug? Why the heck do they call it a love bug? GF you need to come up at least a bit further north :))) You would love Tennessee!! No Love bugs here.. LMAO that is unless you ask for one, or you drive one, and Drive one is my dream :))

Disgusting little critters aren't they.I have never seen them this bad lol.I think they call them love bugs because the male and female stick together end to end and are inseperable til they are ready to come apart. We are trying to get back to jersey then we wont' have to put up with those disgusting palmettos and love bugs.EEEWWWWW!

I never heard of these things and I guess they are technically MArch flies (not that I had heard of them, either). I was reading at http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/BODY_MG068 that, "Windshields become covered with the fatty remains, and vision is obscured. During flights, the flies clog radiator fins causing cars to overheat. They also get into refrigeration equipment on trucks causing them to malfunction. The fatty tissue will cause pitting of the car's finish if it is not removed within a few days."
Gross! You be careful out there when you are driving!
