We got a notice in the mail yesterday to inform us that on May 31, a movie will be filmed on our street. I live across the street from a big park.
We are asked not to go out of the house on that day after 6pm at night to 2am.
They did say if this would poss a problem to call them and they would see if they could come up with some kind of solution.
Do you think it is right to do this to citizens?
I am kinda excited, I wonder if I will be able to see anything through the window.

I do not know the rules in Canada but, no, it does not seem right to force that on the citizens.
It is kind of exciting..maybe you could ask if they need extras for the movie..what is better than the folks that live right there!

they would have all their people in place now at this late date.

it is hard to imagine telling people to not leave their houses though. especially if something so cool is going on. what if you work until 8pm and then you cant come home? that would bother me. you know..they can edit things if need be though...lol.
have fun and tell us what movie and how cool it was!!

that is why they said if it would be a problem to call them and they would try to come up with a solution.

They haven't really given you a lot of notice though have they? Its your house so you should be able to come and go when you like, without seeking permiossion from other people, unless they are willing to compensate you in some way.

WOW! that would be the cool stuff. Have you wondered if they might need any extras. I would be standing at my door with it opened just so I could watch. I watched a movie being filmed when I was younger, it was being filmed in Chicago, Ill. and they were cops chaseing cars on the roads that run under the Loop that is in Chicago it was neat to see because everytime the guy yelled cut the cars had to start the chase over. Have fun when it starts and enjoy the day at a live movie.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Because if they had not notified you then they run the risk of people crowding around and interupting the shooting of the movie. Do you know what movie it is they are filming? If not could you please let us all know when you find out? I think that is so cool that you are going to have a movie filmed in your neighborhood. Keep us posted!

I think that they do have the right to ask this of citizens. Imagine that they had to use a man made set for every scene in every movie. It would cost much more to make and in turn, cost citizens more to view the movie. And plus, they are asking basically for everyones support and if there would be a problem, to let them know.
I would be so excited too! I would be watching out my window all night! lol

I don't know how it is in Montreal, but usually you need a permit from the city in order to film in any public location, partially so that the city can reap benefits and partially for helping with the facilitation of regular citizen's lives. It seems as though as long as they have a permit and they are working on helping you to deal with it, then it should be good...
It's always exciting. I remember I was living in San Diego when they were filming Anchorman... too funny. They had to shut down the Coronado bridge, which is a big deal around that area cause of the Naval base out there.

Legally they can't tell you stay indoors.
I do see this as being okay because if you want/need to go out they shouldn't ask you to ring them to sort it out. (as if your asking for permission)
It's exciting but honestly I think film makers can be rude.
A friend lived near a house which was near a filming set for a uk series called Inspector Morse (now stopped) They asked for the people to remain inside but allowed a route for them to get out if needed. (they also allowed them to go see the scenes)
That's not as bad in my opinion but no it isn't right.

well legal always depends on where you live,
it turns out that it was raining and they never filmed anyhow.

Winter this is not right.
I know that they should get the citizens approval on doing that step. I even think that there is a law about that.
That they have to notice you in advance, and if someone has a problem with that, you can tell them that you do not want them to film in your territory.
I know that you can even turn to a lawyer and he will explain it to you.
They do not have a right to do that, until all of the people that do live on the property that they are using, agree to this.

they have the right they got the license from the city to film there and they gave apparently 6 days notice but I only got the notice yesterday.

It is direct intrusion on individual liberties . You should have strongly objected to such unruly behavior from a film maker .

this is normal when a film is being shot and something you just have to put up with, they get their permit from the city and everything is legal.

I think the first thing I'd do is call the local city council or police station to make sure this was legit. I cannot answer for Canada, but here in the States movie makers have to get permits for certain areas and they cannot tell people not to leave their homes. I'm sure this must be pretty exciting, but I think I'd still make sure this is legit and if the law of your city in on your side.

of course they have a permit, they would not be allowed to film otherwise. This question is just put here for the purposes of discussion, they are legally right, the question is are they ethically right.

I have no idea, you would have to call them up for a solution as they said in the notice.

I don't think that this is right. You pay your rent or paid for you house you should be allowed to do what you want. Unless someone is going to compensate me for my time I am not going to follow their rules of when I can and cannot leave my home.

Well, it pays to ask what you can get out of it. I mean, they're gonna cause your family a great deal of discomfort by locking yourselves in there for 8 hours...what if you need to get something that you need in the kitchen, etc.. right? So I think you need to inform them that you would like to demand some kind of a reward for behaving/cooperating with them...say...a premiere night pass or invite to the movie..lol..or an autograph and a kiss from the actor, perhaps a seat-in w/ the crew in the shoot :) That'll be fun for sure...lol

i can do anything I want to do in the kitchen it is not outside, walking where they are filming.
I probably could even go out my back door if I had to.

You ask, "Do you think it is right to do this to citizens?" What exactly is it that you think they are doing to you?
Honestly, they gave you ample notice to make arrangements to stay indoors or be at another location. It really does sound exciting, though!

the question was posed as a ethical one, yes they have the legal right, do they have the ethical right to tell people they cannot walk on their own street, they cannot park their cars on their street, they cannot more or less go outside on their balconies etc because it would interfere with the filming,
but what about the inferences with the everyday routine of the people on the street notice or no notice, this is the topic of discussion here.
