Calling all mylot poets;
I was wondering what first brought you into writing poetry? I originally started writing to express my feelings towards my girl friend at the time. (after that blew up) people started saying i was good and getting better. so I kept at it =)
What about you? all response are valued and if you reading no matter what your take on it is I would appreciate your views. (even if you don't believe your good) I'm sure many think this, so please don't be put off..
~joey
P.s I'd like to mention my community for poets and artists. it's a wonderful place which is having trouble "growing".. if your interested please visit www.poetryrtonline.com/forum/index.php

i first started writing poetry when my ex-girlfreind lied to me to make me not feel so bad when we broke up, i managed to squeeze out about 200 poems in a month and i just threw them all away but somehow someone pulled them out a a few months later i was contacted and asked if i wanted all my great poems back etc.. i said what? i thought they were all gone, turns out someone used them for teaching an english class and wanted to know if she could keep them, i borrowed them to make copies on my computer but gave them back, truly anybody can write poetry, all poetry is is how you feel i mean a poem can be as simple as
poetry
observant
entertaining
mental block
or as complex as the odysy (the one by homer)

i started writing poetry to express myself. It was to express the misery i was feeling at the time. Funny thing is, my poetry is still MOSTLY about my misery. i will write to express love, too, though.

I guess I've always been creative, but it was always writing stories, mini-soaps and short stories, never poetry, until my depression back in 2003, I was able to use my depression to creative emotive, profound and sometimes deep poetry to get out my strong inner emotions, they were very powerful and I still have them now to look back on, I guess it was a way of releasing my frustrations through writing.

I dabble sometimes in poetry but I really prefer writing stories and books. \joey are you getting the newsletter yet, you need to give me your email so I can see what the problem is.

I am very interested in viewing your site but I seem to be having problems geting it to come up. I will try a couple of more times but sure would like your help on accessing your site. I write some poetry and have no idea whether it is any good or not. I write poems when the mood hits me. I will try again and probably if I can't access it from your discussion I will go to your profile and see if I can get access from there.

Well i started writing poetry when i was nine year old.
I did it for myself, and did not show them to anyone.
At the age of four year old my father started reading me the songs and stories of shakespeare, chekhov and our national poets, so i always felt it is very natural for me to express myself through writing songs.
I never thought of writing for someone, it was more of a feeling that i am writing to get all of the inside of me outside.
Much like a self therapy.
I would join your community, but i do write only in Hebrew.
I find it hard to express myself in the English language, because it is not my mother tongue language.

I began writing poetry seriously when I was in the 6th grade. We had weekly poetry assignment. We could either write our own poems or memorize someone's else. I tried to to do someone else's poetry first, but it didn't work well. So I opted to write my own. Since then I may have stepped away from writing for moments in my life, but I've never stopped. I guess I was born to be a poet!

I first started writing poetry when I moved to Scotland. I was taking a creative writing course online. This course changed my way of thinking. When I least expected it, the words just came tumbling out. I used to live in Alaska so I started writing about that. It was as if I was still there. I write a lot about nature, my life. It is very theraputic to write about your experiences.
Thanks for the reminder of your group. I know I have been absent but I seem to have a bit more time these days. I am entering a few contest in the next coming weeks.

I wrote my first poem when I was eleven. It was about a boy and it got me into trouble. Even though the boy did not even exist. Anyway, I love to write poetry, but it seems to be a dying art. I wish that there was some way to spark people's interest in it. I put one of my favorite peoms on here a long time ago and it never got even one response.

I have a new book out called To Touch a Heart. I have won many awards for my poetry....I started reading poetry when I was a child and it was always my life long dream to be a writer and poet. My first book An Ax in the Sandbox is a contemporary novel. Scary, in some ways. Anyway just keep plugging away. I also sell my poems, framed with borders of flowers on them that I paint. I do craft sales and art festivals. So if you are serious there is a place for you...Oh I do greeting cards with my poetry for the verses....go for it. I believe I have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I did not even realize that Mylot had a section for poetry, but I haven't been a member for very long yet so maybe I justhaven't been through the site thoroughly enough yet. Where is the poetry section? Is it here in discussions? Or in the Blogs or Interest sections? I have been writing poetry since I was 12 years old but gave up on it a while back because it seemed pointless to write it down if no one was ever going to read it. I would like to join the poetry section, please respond and tell me where to find it on here or if I have to make a blog or what?

I first started when I was about 12 just because, then quit and started again when I was in college, then quit and started again last year.
It's funny how I really think the time away from it made me better at it, or maybe just the life experience with more material to draw upon and so many different and great people who crossed through my life here and there.
I don't think mine are all that great, but some people do so I guess it's not my choice to decide.

Hi Joey *waves*
I write poetry as a form of expression. Sometimes it is an emotional release and other times it is intellectual. I think about a good subject and then tinker about with different perspectives on how it could be viewed or the language to create a certain mood for the reader.
Also some people seem to think I write good stuff although I do wonder about their credibility ;)

i find poetry as something that helps me express my feelings mostly to do with people in my life and misery etc. as i always seem to write my best poetry when going through a cycle of serious depression and i have used it as a way of helping myself over the years, i let it just flow out then if i read it i can study it and work out what i need to do to get better, seems daft and stupid probably but i can understand myself better in my poetry rather than just feelings of anger and sadness in my head

I was about 8 yrs old, and I remember having a blank journal type book and sitting on my front stoop, attempting to write two poems, one about my cat, and one about traffic.I got hooked on trying to bring to life , short intense images with words.

Same here. It was my boyfriend at the time who got me into it. He wrote me a poem one day and I thought I should return the favor. I got hooked and I did it for awhile after we broke up. But, I lost motivation few years after that. So, I don't write anymore and I forgot how to as well.

LOL, Joey...I'm not good with poetry. I know that people who are expressive and passionate can write poetry fast and good. I don't expressed my emotions easily. I tend to be subdued and keep everything inside of me. I can write a few short articles. But still, my emotions can't be easily read. I only show my emotions to people I'm close with. :)

hello i started writing when i was young to express my feelings while growing up in an abusive family, and felt it was a relief from the pain, and anger, i quit writing for a few years and now just write when i have something to say that i dont want to really talk to others about, i belong to poetry .com and i have recieved several recognitions for some of my poetry. and i beilieve it is a wonderful way to express your self! and would tel any one to atleast try it once poetry comes in so many different forms that i am sure there is a form or way for everyone to express them selves through poetry and i say hats off to those who do! hope you have a good time writing.

I started writing poems when I was 11 years old, not because I wanted to but because I had to. I was admitted to my school's official school paper staff and I was obliged to make a contribution. It was morning and I still had no articles to submit and so while on my way to school, I wrote my first ever poem and it was about friendship. I finished it just on time, upon arriving to school and I was so proud. My adviser liked it and that one poem made me me appreciate literature, not just poetry, but its other forms as well.
