Funny how Yankee fans get irritated so quickly. Now every day someone has somethng nasty to say about the team. Now some are even worried that the should not have gotten Roger Clems back. Too much money for a team in trouble? How quickly people carp. The Astros are not doing very well but we still support them and our local press is not slicing our team up but the New York media seems to be doing so. Any thoughts?

Yankee fans are the most impatient, fair-weather fans in baseball. It is sad, really. A few years of post-Steinbrenner's 200M payroll and Yankee stadium would be completely empty.

Indeed. I had to laugh the other day when the fans booed Roger Clemens. Of course those of us in Houston are laughing because he jumped ship from here to NY. What would dear old George do if he was the owner of the Tampa team? We watched the Astros play them and saw almost noone in the stands. Having visited NY and been a fan of the Mickey Mantle era, I agree with you and I dont understand why the fans act the way they do. Our Astros have great fan support even when they are not playing well. They stink this year but the stands are still full of appreciative fans.

Not really a baseball fan, just bumped into a joke that is funny, enjoy:
There were two old guys, Abe and Sol, sitting on a bench in a park feeding pigeons and talking about baseball.
Just like they did every day, Abe turned to Sol and asked, "Do you think there's baseball in heaven?"
Soloman thought about it for a minute and replied, "I dunno, Abe, but let's make a deal:
If I die first, I will come back and tell you -- and if you die first, you come back and tell me --if there is baseball in heaven."
They shook on it. Sadly, a few months later poor Abe passed on.
One day soon afterward, Sol was sitting there feeding the pigeons by himself when he heard a voice whisper, "Sol... Sol...."
Sol responded, "Abe! Is that you?"
"Yes it is Sol," whispered the spirit of Abe.
Sol, still amazed, asked, "So, is there baseball in heaven?"
"Well," Abe said, "I got good news and I got bad news."
"Gimme the good news first," said Sol.
Abe said, "Well... there is baseball in heaven."
Sol said, "That's great! What news could be bad enough to ruin that!?"
Abe sighed and whispered, "You're pitching here on Friday."

Well I think it has something to do with that gigantic payroll that they are getting so little out of. When they spend that much money thet set the expectations very high, and nothing short of first place will (or should for that kind of money) will do.
Still for those of use who hate the Yankees, it is a very fun time. Watching my Blue Jays kid pitchers baffle them the last couple of days has been the highlight of the week.

I think you have really hit the nail on the head. George Steinbrenner pours money every where. Sometimes it helps, sometimes not. Several times over the years I've seen the kids win. I remember the year that Atlanta started a lot of very young players and had a great season. Think the Marlins and Diamondbacks did too.

The problem with the Yankees is that they spend a ton of money to get free agent senior citizens to anchor the team. They always sign starting pitchers who are near or over 40 years old to be the backbone of the rotation. I hope they try to bring back Whitey Ford to be the #5 starter.

We are still here. It's easy for astros fans to be satisfied with mediocrity, its been a part of astros play for a long time now. On the other hand, the Yankees have gotten their fans so used to a level of excellence never known by any other team, that it is hard to see them playing at the level of lets say...the astros. So whan you begin to get all happy about the Yankees slump, remember these numbers. 26, 39. That is the number of championships and pennants the Yankees have won, 26 & 39.

Ah yes, spoken by a true Yankees fan1 OLO. The Yankees do have a better record than our Astros- at this point nearly everyone does. But the Yankees have been around a lot longer too. Some of those championships were before the Astros were even thought of. Plus your owner has a LOT of moeny. Lets's face if if the Astros offered you a 4 year contract for $40 million and the Yankees offered a 4 year $80million, which would you take? Trust me we are not satisfied with the lousy play. We keep hoping that one day the team will put things all together. Thanks for your comments.

It seems that both fans and those absolutely hating the Yankees get irritated quickly. I am a hardcore Yankees fan, and personally enjoy the irritation the subject causes. It seems that regardless of the year or the play of the Yankees, they remain a hot topic in the discussion of sports. I still and always will support my team, but as long as they continue to have a massive bankroll and acquire big name stars, the Yankees will continue to draw a crowd. Maybe it's not so important who sports fans support, but rather, the fact the baseball still draws a crowd. Controversial subjects such as the New York Yankees are what propels baseball to remain America's favorite past time.

Well said. I grew up in the 50's and the Yankees were my favorite. Now of course I have to wonder how nice it must be to have an owner who can buy players no matter the cost. Does Joe Torre really manage the team? Historically I think the Yankees are the American team. All the rest are followers in the lore of baseball.
Of course I'm an Astros fan and suffering this year.
