I very rarely need to water my plants, even my garden. My secret is lots and lots of mulch. Every spring I bug my neighbors for their grass clippings and I collect them from my yard as well. Then right after planting, I water deeply then apply a 6" layer of grass clippings to all my flower beds and garden. Not just around the plants but the whole bed. I then don't have to water for another month unless it rains then I don't water at all and my flowers and veges grow HUGE with tons of flowers and veges. The one year we did have a drought, I did water all my plants very deeply in the middle of it but that was it. As the mulch decomposes, I just add more to keep it at 6" thick. Since the clippings decompose, I never have to fertilize either.

Thank you. Would you believe my dad had a huge garden and orchard but I didn't learn all my secrets from my dad. Instead I learned them thru reading and just experimenting. Wonder if my dad knew all this but chose to 'do things the hard way'. lol

In summer, I water the plants in every alternate days with sufficent amount of water. For plants in pots, watering is twice in a week, if kept under partial shade and on alternate days, if kept in Sun. For bigger plants, watering once in a week will be alright. Spraying of water on the leaves of bigger plants in summer season will also help a lot! Watering in morning time is more helpful for the plants than in evening. For vegetable plants on beds, watering sufficently on alternate days will be alright. This watering schedule is for summer season only(April, May & June). If rain is there, this may be taken into account also. Thanks.

We are having the same problem 'innercity.' We are having 90 degree days and 60 degree nights with no rain! We are watering every morning and evening as well. It is keeping us busy! Last night it thundered and lightninged like there was going to be a big storm and it passed right over us.

I water my garden in the evenings. I water it almost everyday. My garden seems to be doing really well. I live in the city, and I've got corn coming up!

I give them water as much as they need. But how do we recognize their need of water? We must know their type of plant and the type of media you use. If the media can't absorb water and the plant need water, we must give them water twice a day. I water my plant in the morning and always talk with them when I give them water.

It sounds like you have everything under control. I have a tomatoe plant in a pot, and it seems it needs more water. It dries out very quickley.
