With the advent of sports channels like ESPN I have seen events that I never would have thought of as sports. I have seen chess, is that sport? For the last couple of years I have seen on Espn and now ABC, the National Spelling Bee. How does anyone consider s-p-e-l-l-i-n-g a sport?

Here's the thing... it's not a sport, and although ESPN is a sports network, their actual channel designation isn't strictly about sports. ESPN stands for the "Entertainment and Sports Programming Network." It falls under their "entertainment" category, like poker, like dominoes, and any other "game" that gets broadcast on television. I don't think anyone mistakes spelling bees for sport, though... at least, I hope not. There is no way to consider spelling a sport.

Good point! I had forgotten all about that little "Entertainment" part. I just still remember some comedy skits showing people snoring at a chess match. LOL!

Hahaha... i remember the SNL skit, the Spartan Cheerleaders, when Will Ferrell and Cheri Oteri are cheering at a chess match for their "school." LoL

Yeah...it's a valid question if ESPN really was just "sport" but you already know that's not true from the first response! I tend to forget ESPN is not just sport too though! lol It's kinda easy to do that because they do broadcast mostly sporting events!
But I like to watch the spelling bee anyway. I'm watching tonight... although this is the first one I'm watching! They're down to two spellers. I never realised they used to televise it till a year or two ago...and this is the first time I happened to flip on the TV and it was on...but it's not ESPN I'm watching...it's ABC..I don't know if it's going to be shown on ESPN later...or what. I saw Akeelah and the Bee on a plane ride and had to get the DVD....I guess I just enjoy spelling fun! :)

Yeah I too had forgotten the "entertainment". How is the National Spelling Bee entertainment or sport. ABC must not have anything else on. Oh well eah to his own, snore LOL...

At least it moves faster than chess! I guess since there is competition it is considered a sport.
