What were they thinking?

I just left a store where there was an SUV parked in the fire lane, the engine was running, and there was a dog inside it. If the driver didn't want the dog or the SUV, couldn't he or she have put ads in the paper? Certainly someone would give the dog a good home, and it would be better to sell the SUV than to have someone steal it, wouldn't it?

did you stop to think the driver may have left it running to give air conditioning to his dog (begause he/she cared about the dog?also just because it was running does not mean it wasnt locked !dont judge them before you have all the facts friend

Judge not, lest ye be judged, right? It's a good thing no one had decided to take off in the SUV. Locked doors don't always stop thieves.

We've left our car running with the dogs in it in a parking lot before. :) We still lock the doors, and are only inside for a few minutes. Namely to drop off a movie or when my husband picked me up from work, and I didn't realize he was waiting in the parking lot. This has also always been on our base, where everyone watches out for everyone else, and crime is pretty low. I don't think I would do it off base, though. My poor dogs would just have to deal with the windows just being open a little bit if I HAD to get something when they were with me. But I would never leave them alone in the car for more than 10 minutes anyway.

I totally agree with you on the parking in the firelane thing. There is no reason for that. Especially with living animals in the car. If there is a fire, most fire engines just push the car out of the way if they need to. I can't imagine needing something so bad that I would risk the lives of my pets, and my car, just to run in and grab a gallon of milk or whatever.

You're lucky to live in a place where it's so safe, and smart to realize it isn't that safe everywhere. I'm not trying to make a mountain out of a molehill, but the parking in the fire zone could've prevented firefighters from saving lives. Okay, the chances of a fire starting while they were there were slim, but the chances are always slim, aren't they?

I often wonder about people that leave their cars running and leave them outside while shopping or running an errand. The thief only takes a few seconds to take what is not his to take. The dog also if the car was running I would hope had the air conditioning running for him. If not then authorities could be called. Would be nice if people would use the brains given to them.

I've heard of cases where thieves hop into cars with small children in them, thinking they're just stealing cars. What they're also doing is kidnapping, and at least once it led to murder when a kid tried to jump out of a moving car. That is tragic, and I feel sorry for the mother who left the kid in the running car while she ran into the store.
