When I look at a new recipe in a book, I take the basic ingredients that make the dish unique then I add my own twist, especially if there is something I know my family or I do not like, for example I hate cloves. I never follow a recipe verbatim. I get most of my new ideas from the Food network Emeril Lagasse is my hero.

The only time I follow a recipe is when I bake. As we all know, baking is a precise art. When I am cooking entree, etc...I like to put my own flavors in the dish. I practice so I can get better at whipping stuff up without having to think much about it. I also watch a lot of cooking shows which give me ideas on which spices blend well together.

I have a cook book for some things sitting over away so as not to become damaged by spills etc. Most things though I do not need a recipe. I need the actual recipe from any website with a recipe. I do the rest and adjust it if necessary to fit the needs of my family. Experience allows you a license to cook without a book. Good luck in all your cooking.

Sometimes, if I am making a new dish, I go by a recipe. Sometimes, I just look at the ingredients and then use my imagination! I make sure to keep the time and temperature in consideration with the variation that I come up with.
I am part hillbilly, a from-scratch type of cook. A little of this and a little of that, and use what ingredients have went well together before. Sometimes, I don't measure, just use what "looks" like the right amount. My family enjoys the food that I concoct!

Actually, I like to get creative when I cook, sure cook books can help a lot, but I just would rather do things my own way. Sometimes it's fun to add more creativity to the food you make. Usually it works for me and it's a lot of fun.

I would follow a recipe book only if I need to. I like to be creative when I cook and add some spices to experiment and so far it has been working great.
