Why do so many people have dogs they cant handle? My stepdaughter used to have a pit and though she was very docile I knew that if that dog wanted to go she would be hard to handle. The other day I was walking my dachsund and stopped to talk to a lady why was attempting to control her dog. The lady was about 5'6" and the dog was only 7 months old. At 7 months he stood at least waist high. Standing on two legs he could put his front paws on my shoulders. Why do so many people think they can control BIG dogs?

Yeah unsure why people do that. We have a big dog, a black lab and I stay far away from her cause I know I can't handle her and I can't handle how she jumps on me either, my boyfriend has been very good telling me that he does not want me to take care of her cause she scratches me so hard when she is excited that it makes me bleed. Unsure why small people think a big dog is better for them, but I will never have one.

Right. And to me I dont understand why these same people dont take these dogs to obedience school. That would help some. Of course to me, when a big dog puts his mind to something he'll do it not matter what.

Got that RIGHT, our lab when she had puppies was very protective of them and we live next to a vacant maintained lot that is often used for the neighbors to walk their dogs in, one time a dog walker got too close to our property and she shot out like a bullet after them, of course I went running after her, but not before she managed to chase this poor woman up the side of a van, I was furious and ever since then I have kept her locked up behind a fence. Needless to say, we were written up by our homeowners association, which I brought to the attention of our son, since it is his dog, but unsure what he is going to do, I think she needs to go to training school, but he seems to think it was a one time incident because of the puppies.

But I forgot to mention, I thought they should have fined us for such behavior and we would have made our son pay the fine, to make him realize the severity of the dogs actions towards others.

They may want to feel safe with a large breed dog at their side. However, the key word missing here is proper training. I have always had large breed dogs. I just love them. I prefer big dogs just because I don't like dogs that look like little rats. Anyways, I've always trained my dogs to be obedient. They are just like children. They need to be taught how to behave properly. So many people don't do any obedience training, and they just expect the animal to be a canine good citizen. Not going to happen. Basic obedience works wonders.

Yes! Training! Very important. I've seen big dogs with no social graces or those who were timid. I just prefer little dogs cause I can control them better and I have less mess to clean up. I've had 3 dachsunds over the years. I still like the comment made on one of the Dog Show Cahmpionships about them. They do what you want them to do when they want to do it.

Seems to be the way a lot of people think. Big dog-bit bite. Scares off some people.
