Watching Television doesn't work your Brain

People who are mentally and physically less active in middle age are three times more likely to get alzheimer's disease later in life. It has been reported that brain scan show that exercising the brain - such as when navigating while driving or practising the piano makes the parts used grow, while less used areas shrink. When watching television the brain goes into neutral.
My father passed away last year and we were in the dark when the doctor told us that 'his brain is shrinking' How do we know that we have alzeimer's disease?

well my mom fiannly gave up on thinking she didnt have alzhimers and she dont she just has short term memory but she did have dementcia and then later they gave here pills to slow down the alzhimers which she still dont have she had a stroke she is 87 sharp as a tack on long term memory. She kept very busy by playing the organ and doing things never sat to long infront of tv. Me am at the computer all the time or chasing granddaughter so I dont think my brain is sleeping lool.
but it is very hard on people to all of a sudden fall to alzhimers for it creeps up on you.
I never heard of a shrinking brain but I guess it can happen if you dont use it .So sorry for your loss I hope you are ok.

I know it is very confusing. We have always tried to eat right for son in laws father had a by pass on heart at the age of 41 so we watch what we eat reall always have.
But when my hubby was diagnosed with Cancer we had no answers for it he took chemo and every thing we could do we did he only lasted 9 months after that and really were no signs that he was that sick. he was just turned 62 and that was 2 1/2 years ago took me along time to stop cring every day.

I have come to terms with the loss of my father. But have to analyse why his brain shrink and try to avoid to go through what he has been doing to cause his brain shrinkage. I am also in the dark as to this medical conclusion like having brain shrinking, kidney and liver shutting down. Maybe all this happen due to lack of health care which expedite internal aging. My father was 73 years old. He could have lived a few more years if he had been health conscious.

I am sorry to learn that your father passed away last year. I don't watch much television myself nowadays. I had read that one can get alzheimer's disease later in life if one doesn't exercise ones' brain. So i try to read newspaper daily , do word puzzles occasionally. Hopefully keep my brain involved will help matters. Cheers:)

..!!
That was scary.
Now I guess I'll get a phobic of my TV!
It was something new for me to my knowledge area!
Thanks for letting us know about it!
I guess I must indugle in more realistic life rather than this digital world!
I tend to watch TV almost whole of the day( its my holidays)
I must do somethings else rather than letting my brain shrink!!
Thankyou Zandi458.

I don't believe all television puts your brain in neutral. If you watch cartoons, adult dirt, and sit coms all the time maybe. There are plenty of good educational programs and good challenging game shows on there, for both children and adults. Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, science programs, National Geographic are all great for the mind, just to name a few. Although televangelists get a bad rap at times, there are many good solid Biblical shows on, and for some people who are unable to get out of their homes, that is all the church worship they have. I do believe one can worship without going to church, but sometimes structure can be good too.

It depends on what you watch. We watch shows that teach things. Gardening, weather, who dun its and even game shows can keep your mind working. Of course often when I watch I also am doing other things. Multi tasking. Anyway, Alzhiemers is a bad thing though little is understood and it probably is linked to diet in some way. Sorry for your loss and I hope Alzhiemers does not visit your family again.

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. i don't watch much television anymore and I have to really block out everything else to sit and focus and pay attention to a show. I guess that would cause the brain to shrink a bit. Who knows? I am always using my brain for something. It is a wander my head or brain hasn't got bigger, LOL.

This is really interesting. I didn't know that link. I think it is true that a lot of people just sit all evening watching TV and not exercising their brains at all, when they could be doing so much more interestint things. In my opinion the TV is the worst invention ever.

Over conciousness may comes depression for few times..
So plz dont think about much alzeimer's.
You have two good points on your discussion like..
1.Active work helps to grow our brain.
2.Vice versa
Actually, it really should be.. I think so!!

Yes, I have heard that people that even do crossword puzzles or word search puzzles will stay alert much longer. The more you exercise your brain the better you are. I had never heard of the brain shrinking but I guess that is exactly what it does. It shrinks because of no exercise.
