Trying to decided whether to trade my car or not

I've been wanting to get a bigger car for a while now. Right now I'm driving a Ford Escort and we have been outgrowing this car for quite some time now. My fiances mom just bought a new car and is offering to trade us her old car for my car. The car she is wanting to trade is a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I would love to have the Jeep for the extra room and I know it's in great condition, but I'm a little concerned about the gas mileage with the gas prices the way they are right now. I will say that is the one really good thing about my Escort is I get excellent gas mileage with it. But I hardly drive too far so I keep thinking maybe it wouldn't be so bad. And this would be a good way to me to trade my car without having to pay payments since we would do an even trade. She wants my Escort for their 16 year old daughter. It would be a perfect starter car for her. Oh what to do, what to do...

If you hardly drive too far in the escort, why would you need a jeep grand cherokee? The gas alone will really hit your wallet. What kind of lifestyle do you have that you need such a big vehicle? If you have a large family, what is wrong with a station wagon? Maybe her 16 year old should just buy her own car, an old beat up thing that won't care if there is another dent or two. If you lived out in the country on a farm, then I would agree with you. If you do not, then why something so big? Gas is only going to get more expensive.

The only reason I was going to trade for the Cherokee is because it would be an even trade. I don't have a really large family but my little Escort just isn't cutting it with room for us anymore. I do realize gas is only going to get more expensive and that's my only major drawback and wanting to do the trade. If we could afford payments I would gladly trade for a wagon or smaller suv but we can't at this point.

This sounds like a great idea, but don't forget about the huge environmental impact that the Jeep would have, as well as it being much more expensive to run and insure. I'm not sure where you live, but in the UK the tax for larger vehicles is going to be raised too, so you may end up paying a huge amount of road tax. And, if you say you only drive short distances, do you really need such a huge car which takes up lots of space and is very difficult to park?? Good luck deciding :) xx

We are definitely going to check into insurance and taxes before we make our final decision. I'm not thinking our insurance will go up too terribly much but I may be surprised.

There are definite advantages with each. While I was pregnant with my son we traded in my husband's gas guzzling Dodge Ram for our Malibu Maxx. We sold my two door Cavalier to my sister, because we decided we would need more room than that. Sometimes I really miss my Cavalier. It got around 40 mpg. The Maxx gets around 28. But if we go anywhere and take the animals, there is no way that we would all fit in the Cavalier. We drive when we go home (1100 miles) and at least the two dogs go with us most times, sometimes the cat does too. There is no way that two grown adults, a baby, a 50 lb dog, a 25 lb dog, and luggage to last us 2-3 weeks would all fit in that Cavalier. That's not even considering when we take the cat and we have to have her cage and litter box!

Sheesh I know what that's like to travel with animals. When I was living with my mom in Florida we had to pack all of our animals up to go to Tennessee to get away from a hurricane. In my moms car was my mom, sister, 2 dogs, a rabbit and a hamster. And in my car I had 4 cats practically stacked on top of each other. Talk about a VERY long 830 mile drive LOL.

if i were you, i would keep the ford escort, it's a really nice car, having a jeep like grand cherokee it's a bit expensive cause it eats more gas :), if you are a wealthy man that might not be a problem :), anyway... as far as i know, ford escort is a big car... or maybe there are many models of ford escort... you'll figure it out ;)

A couple of things. Mileage on the cars is going to be a big issue. If your escort has 80,000 on it and the Jeep has 140,000 it's a no-brainier; keep the Escort. A very-much overlooked issue here is tires. The tires on a Jeep are much more expensive to replace than that of an Escort (~$400-700 vs ~$200-500 depending on quality) check the tire tread on both cars first. The Jeep is also over ten years old now, thus junkyards will stop stocking parts for it. That means if it has a major malfunction somewhere the only available option is buying new parts for it which can cost upwards of 3 times more. The Escort is a Ford though, so maybe it is a good idea. A side note as far as family relations go. If it so happens that you trade for the Jeep and it is a cherry that lasts you another 150,000 miles and the Escort clunks out in 10,000 you will never hear the end of it at family functions...

The tires on the Jeep are brand new so we won't have to worry about that for a little while. But I have thought about that. And I've also thought about your point about how this could have an effect on family relations. I told my fiance yesterday that if this starts to become the slightest argument I don't want to do it. Family is more important to me then a car.

Go for it. since you dont drive too much the saving on the purchase of a new vehicle will more than compensate for the cost incurred on lower mileage. and after all a JEEP is A JEEP.

It sounds like a really good deal to me. You would both be getting what you need. If it were up to me I would trade before she changes her mind.
