Speeding down my street

We live just off a major bypass of our town. We have a problem with people speeding past our house. We have kids and animals up and down our road.Just past my house is a sharp turn so they tend to hit the brakes hard when they realize how close they are. My neice, her 2 small children and I were out getting her kids into her van parked on the side of the road. Here comes this truck with 3 young people in it coming like helI from the bypass.Without saying a word to each other my neice and I both jumped into the road. They had plenty of time to stop.I stood beside the road and got their tag number off the plates and immediately called the police, told them where they were driving etc..I also yelled at them to slow down on my road.I haven't seen them down my road since.Hopefully the word will get out that we call the cops and they will find another place to speed! Any thoughts?

Since the traffic appears to be a problem in the warmer months I would love to see speed bumps to have attached during that time. Bolt them to the pavement and occasionally move them along the road and then eventually the speeders would go elsewhere or slow down to protect their cars. Confronting the maniacs behind the wheel carries risk and some liability so the community could block by block administer the speed bumps in the neediest spots for protection of children etc. Good luck with this. We only get occasional speeders, I have a problem with the loud ones!

That is a great idea.I will ask if it is something they can do.I'd like one right in front of my house. I am always afraid for the kids down the street.

Yeah, since it snows here I had just thought about the moveable speed bumps that could be screwed or attached to the street and in different spots. Seems like a good non comfrontation way to affect change. Good luck with yours. Keep me posted and perhaps with your sucess it will help us if we wish to present it!!

Well done Mom - see I told you you were a hero! I just worry that you put yourself in danger! You could well have saved someones life by reporting these kids - as well as saving their future! I hope if they still need to speed they do it in the middle of nowhere off road! xxx

Good for you sis , can't they arrange for some kind of markings on your road or sleeping policemen( speed humps) I hate to see careless drivers we get them all the time , we live in a quiet street and there is this one guy goes around with an open top car and the radio blaring Grrrr . what I could do with a cold bucket of water pal , anyway I digress , good for you sis kept shouting until something is done xxxx

I want to buy you a superman cape, you are a hero. It takes people standing up for the right to help modify the stupidity of the others. I do not imagine that they have quit speeding, but I do imagine that they are doing it somewhere else. You cannot bring back killed children or pets, and it only takes a minute. A very few seconds, to do a lifetime of damage. If you report speeders often enough, perhaps the police will set speed traps there on a random basis as well. Word will get out. Have a great day.

I know the chief of police very well through kids sports and vollenteer work so when they get my calls they always pursue it. When I run into Jeff..the chief I always thank him for whatever so he knows I will be keeping track and this helps keep people on the ball. Hugs

We have the very same problem and we live in a subdivision. I only have one neghbor but alot of people who live in our town come back our road and they speed and squeal tires and you name it all the time back here. they act like it is a dragstrip back here. It drives me nuts so I just call the police every time they start it.

Good for you Raydene! I live on a street that is one block long & people still speed on it! There's a sharp turn at one end & a stop sign at the other & idiots still speed! I swear that people are just out of their minds behind the wheel sometimes!

You really don't save alot of time by speeding anyway.I can not remember the stats on it but you have to drive alot of miles to save even a few minutes.

Decades ago, probably in the late 1970's or early 1980's, I read in a newspaper that a guy was charged with murder because he tried stopping speeders by dumping motor oil into the street. The speeders were actually drag-racing, & someone did get killed. I saw in a comment of yours that you know the police chief, & now I'm taking someone's speed trap idea. Maybe have a speed trap there. When the summons are issued & the speeders get fined, that'll be more money for the government. It's probably not much compared to the local taxes collected, but mentioning that about the fines being collected & adding does at times make things move.

We live on a rural type road and the speed zone is supposed to be 80 km i say it is supposed to be because no one drives it like that it is usually 100km or more when they whip past here. we live on a blind corner to and that makes it all the worse. You have a job getting out of the driveway here in your car they drive so fast u look and nothing then u pull out and look in the mirror and have to hit the gas before the guy behind you jumps in you pocket that is how close they are. It is just nuts.

I have to commend you in taking the time to care about your neighborhood enough to do this. The town where I live actually asks its residents to tell them the streets that people are speeding down so that they can add stop signs to these streets. This has made people slow down. Each time a new stop sign is added the local cop will sit near by to watch the traffic. The first day or two he hands out warnings after that they hand out the tickets. Maybe you could get a stop sign put up to help slow down the speeders on your street as well.

You did a good thing by calling the police. I don't believe people should be speeding especially through suburban areas. Hopefully the police in your area will be able to help more now that they know the problem exists.

You could get people on your street and surrounding streets with the same problem to sign petitions and ask the city to install speed bumps on your street. We have the same problem on our strett only we dont have any bypass or highway or anything right by us. But they just sped up the road and barely slow down for kids to get out of the way. My daughter was almost hit the other night except i grabbed her arm last second....the car was coming up our hill at what i would have to guess to be around 40mph or so. Didnt even see us playing on the scooters...my son ran to the side, my daughter was trying to get her scooter and i had to grab her hard, and actually hurt her arm in the process (i felt so bad)..and then i cursed and yelled at the driver and got his plates...and now our neighborhood is getting a petition together for the city/county to put in a couple speed bumps.
