It happened after I replied to a post. A day after a guy commented on my response. I would have welcomed it if it was the usual sort of response about MY POST. But irritatingly it was a critique on my grammar with having no relation to the topic in any way. I mean sure, my grammar is far from perfect. But give me some allowances here. I'm not a native speaker of English. I do think that my english skills are even better than some who grew up using it. It just got on my nerves for him to criticize me that way.

I think your grammer is very good. It's better than most I've seen on here.
I think that some people just want to go around and say bad things and get people upset. It just makes their day better for some strange reason.
I think that you should just ignore this person's comments. Was his grammer any better than yours? I doubt it.

Wow. So there is something I can do. I remember reading the policies back then but I guess it slipped my mind that there are some actions I can take. Thanks guys.
I do agree piasa. But he succeeded in making me upset. Arg.

Owh puhlease.. I think your grammar is just fine.. Just ignore those type of righteous people. They just have a kick out of making other people look stupid or wrong. And I sure don't think you are. The other day I got a response from a fellow who happens to be from an English spoken country, and i kid you not, I did not understand a word he was saying! As Asians, we should be proud that our English is up to par with their standard. Of course it's not Oxford or Cambridge level, but hey, it's still English. Good English! Btw, just out of curiosity, what was it that that person corrected you about?? ;P

Hehe. I agree. Asians are very conscious of grammar. We are taught formal english and that is what we use rather than the conversational type. I would have wanted to get back at that person by searching his posts and see the "perfection" of his grammar, but that would be stooping too low. One mistake was the use of double verbs. I happened to say "I do debates" and according to mr. high and mighty I should have just said "I debate." Arg.

If he had a problem he should contact MyLot. Since he replied to your post critically makes me think he knew MyLot would think he is being petty, which he probably was. This current post makes me wonder how bad your grammar could be since you have done wonderfully with this one.

It was a short paragraph which I'm Sure anyone can understand. I just happened to say "I do debates" and he corrected me that I should have just said "I debate." Well he should have just forgiven me if I want to treat debate as a noun. There were some other minor points but that one stuck to my mind.

I do not think it is appropriate to correct other peoples grammar or spelling here on mylot. If you ask for help to improve your english - fine. I have seen people do that. Most of the people I see here are not using their first language. Even if we were people do make mistakes. Mistakes can be corrected at school, at work, or in other settings where you are prepared for it or ask for it.
This is the first of your posts I have read i think. I agree: your english skills are pretty good!

Thanks. I do make some mistakes every now and then. My English still need lots of improvement. But I get by and always try to review my work.

As long as the comments on your grammar were not rude, you should take them in the spirit in which they were meant, RookRocks. After all, we could all use a little positive input now and then. I would suggest that you grow a thicker skin. I see some on here and other sites whose grammar is truly atrocious.

I suppose he was not rude about it. But the "spirit in which they are meant" are more on the side of insulting me than helping. He could have just told me privately but instead he posted it on the discussion itself, which is not about grammar or the English language in any way. I think he meant to make fun of me.
I agree that I should have just shrugged it off and not let it affect me in any way. But improvements should go both ways.
Thanks for the response.

I know how you feel, it's happened to me more than once and I don't appreciate it at all. Even though English is my native language when I'm writing I'm not thinking about grammar, especially here. Some people need something to complain about and that member probably didn't get his/her quota for the day. I say the heck with them. By the way you do very well considering it's not your native language.

You can always tell that righteous person to mind his own business. We join mylot to gain friends, to make and respond to good discussion and to earn. We are not here to correct other mistakes much more on spelling and grammar. You should slap on his face that english is just our second language and we are more good in english than in our neighboring countries and we are good far from where he came from. Sometimes you have to make some extra harsh words to immature people here.
Nothing is wrong with your english as well as topics you are being discussed here!

True True. As I have commented above those who were formally taught English (like us) are more conscious of their grammar. And yes, we are better than some people raised on the language. They take it for granted while we are more careful of the usage.

Don't worry about your grammar as most people here are foreign to English speaking like myself. English is not my mother's tongue and I learnt it as a second language in school. As long as your discussion is being understood, you should be happy. I often test whether other people do understand what I am saying is by the overwhelming response that I received. Some people like to spot people's mistakes, so be it. You can't avoid them. Just tell them to mind their own business, its rude to say it but what else can you do when they embarrrassed you in public like this - the whole word see it.lol

Hi, RookRocks, better ignore them. Mylot is international platform. People here of brought up in different culture and and their outlook may differ. Therefore, please give lot of discount when you get bad responses. Jut ignore them and never nurse any bad feeling about it. Thank you.

That's right. I never mind other people's grammar. The same courtesy should have been extended to me too.

What else can I say, my friend. They have said it all. You are perfect alright. Ignore people who are negative. Don't be pulled by negatives, okay? Be cool! Cheer up! Many from us have already given their moral support. Don't let yourself down just by one person. Have a nice day!

Thanks. I didn't expect this overwhelming support. To tell you the truth -- I was just venting. I didn't think people will pick it up and rally for me. Hehe. Just goes to show a lot of people here are understanding folks, and the guy who did me wrong was just an exception.
I'm already having a nice day. Thank you all for making it better.

I think it is unappropriate to correct the grammar of anyone here on mylot, as long as they are understandable that would be okey or else you try to ask for further clarification on the matter. Mylot is trying to welcome nationalities around the world, so no one should expect that we are perfect in using english either spelling or grammar. Anyway, don't get your blood raise stay cool and ignore that critic. Happy mylotting.

In my own opinion, your thoughts doesn't necessarily have to be a perfect English grammar. What's important is the content of your paragraph, your THOUGHTS and it's not all about grammar. As long as people can understand and can relate to your words, then you're good. I'd rather read paragraphs with simple, short and meaningful sentences than those with high falluting words but can't understand the content.
Just ignore those criticisms and don't be too much affected on it.

I really hate it when people post just to pick apart your grammar. No one really cares about minute details in your typing, especially on the internet, except maybe English teachers and forum trolls.

I doubt if even English teachers would have gone as far to criticize me. They would have been understanding people. It was just a stroke of malice that made him do that, I suppose. Thanks for the support.
BTW, forum trolls? That's the first time I heard that. Lol. But it carries a lot of meaning. I'll pick that up on my vocabulary. :-)

Hey! Relax. Just ignore him or better thank him. At least he read your post. And he might not mean to insult you or what not. I think it's good to take everything into consideration. Perhaps he appreciates your being good in English and found just one where he can say something. We should not be onion-skin sometimes. You have a good command of English so just let those who know less to shout what they know. Sometimes I just smile if I encounter people like this. Papansin lang and he succeeded to get your attention. keep on posting and I hope that you'd not be discouraged.

Native English speakers on this site should check their grammar and spelling, to set a good example for those that are learning it. But for non-native speakers all that is important is that their writing is clear and easy to understand, which, although you make 3 tiny errors, yours is.
All the best, urban

Well RookRocks, if it's worth anything I'd say you're grammar is better than mine and I'm English! Shouldn't worry too much about it, I know it's annoying, but the whole point of mylot is to bring together all different cultures and countries. I left another site as there was too much 'bickering' about grammar - we're not here for an English lesson, just to join in with the whole of the community - hope all is going better now!

As far as I am concerned, reading your post, your English is acceptable, and certainly good enough to converse with others here. If I were you, I'd not be too annoyed by this guy who commented on your English. I'll just politely tell him "Thank you for trying to improve my grammar, but do you have anything positive to contribute that is relevant to the subject of this discussion?"

i think the more important thing here is to let people understand what you are trying to say..! regardless of the grammar, if what you're saying is clear and understood by people, then it's ok..! if criticism is stated as a DON'T in the rules of mylot, then i also suggest that you report him/her..! :D
