Do you work in the field you have a degree in?

I currently graduated from college with a dual Bachelors in Business Administration and Accounting and even though I am "working" in my field that I have a degree in I cannot help but wonder how many people have a degree and don't work with it at all and if this is the case why not? and do you ever plan to?

Hi pooh1623, I hold some degrees. I studied in US. All of my degrees are related to business areas with different specialization. I am currently a self-employed. Being a self-employed, I think I can still do what I had learnt from schools and currently, I enjoy doing it. In my opinion, a Business degree can be applied to everywhere. You know... many people who don't hold a degree from Canadian Universities may have a difficulty in finding a job in Canada and I didn't realize this fact previously. Most Canadian employers also want to hire job seekers who have Canadian experience. Thus, I can understand that many people in Canada don't work according to their degrees.

Hi pooh1623, I think you have misunderstood what I was saying. Many people came to Canada as immigrants and they hold degrees from their own countries. I studied in US and I hold degrees from US universities.

So you are self-employed? what do you do? Why would some one with a degree from a Canadian University have trouble finding a job in Canada, that doesn't make sense?

I graduated from college with a BS in History. So, no, I do not work in the field I have a degree in. I live in a small southern town. So, my degree is virtually useless. I had planned to go on and get a MA and teach at a community college, but that didn't work out. So, I just have to really market my writing skills and other communication skills I learned while going to college.

Kudos to you getting your degree in History, I always hated that subject. So why can't you teach like you planned on doing? What do you do now?

I can't teach public school because my degree is in History and not in education. You have to be certified to teach in public schools and if you don't get a degree in education and then get a recommendation from that college, you can't even take the tests to be certified. To be able to teach in a community college, you have to have a masters degree, which I don't have. So, I can't do either. Right now, I work in an office, just like I did before I got a degree. But, I'm hoping to move to a bigger town soon and get something that pays better and isn't strictly clerical.

Well if teaching is something that you love to do and you feel passionate enough about it, it will happen, just keep visiualizing you teaching and it will happen. Good Luck!!

I graduated in Dec 2007 and I'm working for a company(bio-medical) which is in tune to the major i did in college. Well, job hunt was not easy and I thought of doing odd jobs instead of simply staying at home, but thankfully I came across this vacancy :)

Yup! I have a degree in Software Engineering and I'm a software engineer :) I'm doing another degree in Mathematics (part time, as I work full time). I have no idea what I'll do with myself when I finish this degree. Maybe artificial intelligence research or space engineering.
