I'm the first in my family to earn an advanced university degree. There have not been many people in my family to even go to college.
My grandmother was the only person to have even attended college until I did. And even at this point [I'm 65] there are only one or two who have attended and only one other that has finished even four years.
I have a granddaughter who is finishing her junior year of college this summer, so I guess we are skipping generations!
What are the firsts in your family?

I was the first in our family to attend college. I am the first person to screw that up. LOL
My sister is attending college and becoming a Liscensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and she graduates in August. We are so proud of her.
So, I'd say my sister is the first person that has done something, in our family, to be proud of.

it is sad that you lost that opportunity of a lifetime. anyway, i always say that waht is past is past and there's nothing much that we can do about it. let's make the best of what we have now and work on it. i am happy that your sister is doing good at her studies. good luck in life, sherrir. come what may, we can do something good out of it always, it is just a matter of choice for us.

Not everyone needs to go to college. I know you will succeed in other things.
Are you a parent? You'll have LOTS of opportunities to succed there. You just won't know if you have succeeded to do anything but survive for a long time! LOL

I feel blessed, youdontsay, for being able to be the first one in so many things and at so many levels in my family.
In my whole family, It is only me who earned a university degree with 16 years of education (now 18). Actually my great grand father was a great feudal lord but during his struggle against british colonial rule he lost all his property. My grand father was a very poor man and couldn't afford my father's education but my father did go up till graduation (14 years education) on his own. I was the first one in my family who ever won a scholarship and continued to win merit scholarships regularly. I am the first one not only in my family but in my local secondary school's 25 years (established in 1982)of history who ever won a presidential award. I won two simultaneous merit scholarships in 9th grade and had to give up one because I couldn't hold both.
I was first in my engineering research organization of more than 5000 employees who won a very competitive Government's scholarship to study abroad. There were over 12000 contestants for 90 scholarships throughout the country. and so I am the first one doing doctorate in my family. Similarly the first one who ever published a research paper.
In Job, I am the first one who got high ranking Government Job that too even before result was announced. i.e. I havn't been unemployed even for a single minute. I am still employed while I am studying here in France. My company continue giving me salary with a contract that I'll return to serve them.
Other than Study and Job, I was a student leader, again first in my family. I worked for the rights of students in my country, arranging helping scholarships for them, dealing with their academic problems etc.
I am also the first and only one who has met face to face with the President of my country with recognition of my job work. There are some other things but it will get too lengthy:-) These are the main achievement my parents are proud of me for and I am glad that I was able to make them smile and happy.

You are indeed blessed and a blessing. Little wonder your family is proud of your accomplishments. And I know that sense of satisfaction when you are recognized for your good work. It is not about being puffed up with pride but of knowing that others recognize and value your hard work.
You have a great future ahead of you!

I am the only one in my family to graduate from a 4 year school. (I'm the only one to attend a 4 year school!) I have a sister who did graduate from cosmetology school, and I'm very proud of her.

I am the first in my family to possess a university degree too and my parents are really proud of that. Of course I am proud of that too when I think about my family history. All my ancestors are not really well-educated and I know my parents had high hopes in me when I was a kid, especially my dad. I remember he was really happy and supportive for me to enter into university. That was more like accomplishing their wishes. But somehow in my future, I hope I would do something great or have my own business so that I could support my parents better financially and by then I would be really proud of myself.

Good for you! I am sure that it won't be long until you will be doing something that helps you support your parents financially. Even setting aside a very small bit of money each payday can add up to a sizable gift over time. Don't forget to be proud of your small steps as well as the big ones.
Best of luck to you!

Yes I think just do my best and work hard for it and it would surely add up over time. I can't afford to have another part-time job (already have a full-time one), I believe internet is a good way to achieve the small little goals *smiles*. Good luck to you too!

Setting (Philippines) My mother trained me to be a strong willed person. My family wass always my priority that's why I want to be the best in everything I do for them. I am the oldest so I want to be the role model to my only sister and to my cousins, nephews, nieces who were younger than me.
Since young, my parents wanted me to be the best so everything they want me to do, I always did.
In my Elementary years, I am always on top of the class, joining contests. My parents were proud of me. They said I am their pride.
High school years, books were my bestfriends, no time to go out for fun because I promised to my parents that I will always be on top of the class even though it's very hard for me especially my mom was very hard to please.
College years, my mom was the one who had chosen my course. I wanna be a Chemical Engineer and my mom enrolled me to a Nursing School. That's her dream when she was young but due to financial matters, they couldnt afford to bring her to Nursing school so she was enrolled in a Teacher's School.
Books, trainings, Exams.. it's very hard especially the school where they had enrolled me was one of the best school in our place. I was always pressured because of the exams then Clinical duties at night but still I had survived all those hard times because of my goal.
I tried twice to pass my license exam but unluckily I failed twice so I had decided to go abroad.
SETTING (Singapore) I went abroad to work and at the same time study and after 6 months of studying refresher course in Nursing, i passed my Licensed to be a Registered Nurse.
Then I crossed country to Denmark after my 1 year and 6 months contract in Singapore. It's very hard here because The language was very different and I really need to learn their language to work so i studied Danish Language. I studied again here in Denmark to get a major which is Pediatric Nursing.
Now I am a Registered Nurse Major in Pediatrics. Even though I am very tired of learning I have to learn because of the dreams I promised my mom, to come true.
Next year, its another adventure of my life again. I will be working in Canada and I think that's the best place to settle down, not to settle down to get married but start my life, to be a resident and take my family with me because that's one of their dreams. Because they said every generation of ours, it should be getting better and better.
I want to give my family the best i can give because I promised to myself, that they had given me the life, the things I needed even though we dont have enough money to buy things before. I can still remember what they had done for me just to bring me in school and now it's my turn to repay all the kindness and love they had showered on me. I am very happy that God given me my family. I am very lucky having them. They are my believer, my supporter and my bestfriends, no matter what i am.

i could not exactly say that i was the first one in the family who have done something which the family is so proud of. my father is a very accomplished man, my mother is a grade school teacher. my father was a recognized lawyer of his time and a teacher in college. the lawyers then had only to go 2 years in college and were not required to pass the bar examinations.
however, i was the first one in the family who passed the government licensure examinations for professionals. in 1976, i took the licensure examinations for civil engineers and passed it with a good mark, way above the required passing average. i am inclined to believe that my family was proud of this accomplishment.

I am just like you, I was the first person in my family to go to univsersity and the first one to get a degree. Few of my cousins have gone to college or university since. I am not sure where university got me as such, because i am not in a high powered job, but nevertheless I think it taught me many useful skills and I am certainly proud of my achievement.

Certainly you should not devalue your learning at university/college as the life-lessons one learns are very valuable, whether or not they increase your status or income. It requires hard work, self-discipline, perseverence, determination, and myriad other qualities to complete higher education.
I know that it was a growing experience for you.

I am not really the first to do anything like that in my family since most of my family has advanced degrees, but my husband was the first in his family to get a college degree, and I'm SO proud of him for it! :) He is also the only one out of the three "kids" in his family who has an actual steady career and is completely independent and financially stable. He doesn't always seem to think much of it, but he has really made something of himself and I am really proud of him!!

well in my immediate family. I was the first to graduate college. My husband and children were thrilled to pieces that I did it.
I am the first in my immediate family, mother, mother-in-law, brother-in-law that made a marriage last longer than twelve years. I am still very happily married

You are indeed a winner! Going to school while managing a family is no small feat. I know that from personal experience. I graduated from undergraduate school the same year my older child graduated from high school!
I'm afraid my marriage didn't win the longevity prize, however. My second relationship has lasted longer than the first, so maybe I'll make it afterall.
Congratulations on your successes.

I am the first in my family to have a college degree. I am the only one, actually. My dad went to college but left before finishing.
And now I'm going for more! Started a postgraduate course on restauration of old buildings. So I guess in a year and a half I'll be the first in my family to have an advanced university degree!

Wow! Way to go!
I think it would be wonderful to restore old buildings. I see so many old buildings that once were grand and now are in disrepair and I wish I was wealthy and could buy them to fix them up.
It will be a rewarding career for you!

I've done alot of first in the family even though am the second child. LOL.
During my elementary and high school I made to top ten outstanding graduating students. My older brother is good in his class but did not make it to the top.
I am the first to join math-olympiads and national quiz bowl competitions and travel without my parents but with my coaches and teachers to other places.
At present I am the first to take up a master's degree in our family.

I think I have no talent to teach in the academe. I wanted more knowledge and upgrade from the latest curriculum. I think I wanted to shift from the current field to programming and networking. I don't think am a good teacher. Thanks!

I am the first who gets into the dean's list. When I was in my secondary school, I was being listed as one of the top ten who got excellent result for our yearly examination. Definitely I feel proud of that. And by the way, I am the 'first' who get married late in the whole family too! ( ha ha ha) Does it count?
