I am a Great Auntie!

Our brown eyed girl - My great niece has arrived
Ireland
June 10, 2007 4:57am CST
Again! Not just because my siblings' kids thinks I am the cat's pajamas, but my nephew's little girl has arrived! She was born a bit early and is doing very well. I have added a piccy of our little brown eyed girl, who weighed in at 4 pounds 14 ounces and 17 and a quarter inches. I am so chuffed! She is our delicate little Shell :-) So is anybody else out there a great aunt or uncle, or great grandma yet? I am feeling ooooold!

oh my dear she is so lovely and tender and delicate...I am so fond of children that I think they are the greatest miracles in the world..I hope one day I can have a family of my own, with a loving husband and all the children God will give us ..but until then I am in love with my three nephews..they are twins, three wonderful male twins and are my elder brother's sons..oh I miss them so much because they live away from me..and I am looking forward to spending a bit of time with them...I must wait another week..I am definite an aunt in love with her nephews!!!!

We are on the same schedule! My nephew and my new great niece are far away from me, too, and I will be meeting her in person soon but haven't yet. Do you mean triplets? I bet you are a wonderful aunt!

I bet they are a handful! How on earth did they manage three of them when they were first born? Twins seem hard enough!

Congratulations Woodpigeon honey! It is a wonderful feeling isn't it? I became an aunt at 8 yrs 364 days old and a great aunt at 36! I have only seen my great niece once cos she doesn't stay too near but it still feels good - now I am just waiting for more to arrive and I wish they would hurry up! lol xxx

No they are all 'following their careers' and taking their time to settle down #sigh# I am hoping that my niece who got married a couple of months ago is going to oblige soon but for now I will have to wait! lol

What a lovely little girl and such a sweet term to describe her: delicate little shell. I really like this expression. It´s so adequate and tender. I´m not a great aunt, but my daughter is the auntie of two lovely kids. One´s four and the other one is 6 months old. They are her halfbrother´s children. She first became an auntie when she was three. So don´t feel old. :-)). XXX Dana

Sorry, I didn´t explain this well enough. She was three when she first became an aunt, because her oldest brother had a child. He´s now living in Australia, travels a lot because of his job and we never see him and his kid now. My daughter is the very old auntie "10", lol, of the 3 year old and the baby. They are her youngest brother´s children. They also live in a different country, so she´s only met her little niece. She loves her, but behaves like a mother more than an "old auntie". Then most astonishing about it is that her niece listens to her and adores her at the same time.

Ah, thank you! I am looking for a little glass bottle to put the shells in that I collected for her. Your daughter might have me beat in the world of youthful great aunts, because I was a little bit older when I became an aunt. I wonder if she will be close to the children since they are so close in age?

5days and 5 months - how quickly the little ones grow up - 5.9 pounds to almost 20 pounds in just a few short months.

now close to 160 pounds at 17 and all muscle. lol.
oh, but isn't she a vision of all lovliness, and softness, and what is right and good in this world. thank you for sharing her precious picture. She will be filling out her diapers in no time! my son was 5.9 ounces so a little bigger than her...but still premie diapers were huge on him...he quickly filled them out though. see here at 1 week and then again at 5 mos that diaper cover in the first pic is a size extra small.

What a huge difference five months makes! He was really cute in both the photos :-) My nephew sent me a MMS video of the baby and she is so little, omg. You could see my sister's fingertips holding her at the edge of the screen, and she is just so much smaller than mine now that I have a scale to comapre her to. I know you are right though, they do sprout up quickly! Thanks for sharing your photos, too!

as far as i've gone through your discussions and responses here in myLot, i found you a graet and nice person woodpigeon. and for sure, you are a great aunt, too. well, we all grow old so, stop thinking about age.. hehe. just be thankful that you are nice and loved by many. i don't have nieces and nephews yet. but my cousins who are younger than me loves me. so, maybe, i can say, i am a nice person, too. well, that's what i call, self confidence! and four of my cousins will be delivering their babies within this year. two in july, one in august and one in september... all males. so, i hope i can be a great auntie like you, too - anne

Thank you! I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and baby pictures aren't always terribly flattering, especuially when taken with telephone, but my nephew just sent me a video of the little one taken with the same phone and she is just as cute as a bug's ear and is already looking so much healthier.

I can't believe I didn't see this post! But belated congratulations, my fine-feathered friend, for that absolutely adorable angel!!! She is so precious and sweet and you can just look at her for hours....then they grow up, play soccer and T-ball, lose their socks, whine when they don't get their way....anyway, enjoy her while you can, hahaha! And you are not creaky--good grief, you're only 33! You're just a baby yourself, compared to us old codgers and codgereens (made that up myself!). Blessings to the parents as well, and go spoil her rotten! Flying kisses to the pretty little Angel's Wing (that's a shell, and so fragile and dainty as she is). {{{{*}}}}

Congratulations! She is so cute. Isn't it wonderful having new additions to the family? I'm also a great aunt. I have two great nieces and a great nephew. I also have a nephew that I raised as one of my own, and now his wife will be having a baby in October. I was so thrilled when he told me about it. Since I raised him, I'll consider myself a grandma. Now I have to learn how to do grandma things, like crocheting baby blankets.

It is wonderful, and congratulations on your pending baby! If my nephews or children are going to hold off to have children based on whether I can crochet, my little grand neice will be the last addition we have for a long time!

Thank you! It has but I probably shouldn't post it. It is a lovely female version of a slightly unusual boy's Irish name, and her middle name is a combination of mine and my sister's, both of which have been passed down through the family for generations.

Thak you! I think some of the hair is because she was early, as in some of the photos you can really see it on her back. It will be interesting to see if it stays dark, because her mother is but her daddy is very fair.

Congratulations on the arrival of you grand niece . I had a look at her picture and she is just sweet. Is she in an incubator? How is she doing ? I became a great Aunt a couple months ago, however I have not yet met my grand niece. Her parents live in another province so I will have to wait to meet her until I get a chance to go there.
• Ireland

Thank you! I think it is one of those temperature control beds, but I don't know if that is the old fashioned incubator or not. She is being fed directly into her little tummy, but she is doing really well and already showing signs of improvement. Her mother had magnesium and what all when she was induced so as it comes out of the baby's system she is moving around more. The video my nephew sent shows her wriggling her head around and blinking. She is such a doll! I hope you get to meet your grand niece soon. I have to wait alittle while to see her in person as well.

My roomie is a great aunt (at 46) and her parents are great grandparents and only in their mid/late 60's. My niece is making better choices than her niece did (but I have to say her niece didn't have the best example.)

Hi Woodpigeon, congrats on becoming a great auntie. I am sure it is a lovely feeling with 4 generations living under one roof. I am a GREAT auntie myself, attending to every single whims and needs of my nieces and nephews, babysitting them almost every weekend. lol.

Thank you! We are not all living under the same roof, but we will be together soon. My youngest son is no longer the baby of the family, of which he is very glad, although he owuld have preferred a little boy so he could have 'water fights' with him, lol! There are two kinds of GREAT aunties, aren't there, so I am sure most aunts have already become great aunts, like yourself!

Congrats Pigeon! She is precious, so tiny and fragile looking. Glad she arrived safe and I hope mom is doing good. You have every right to be proud! What a neat story of the shells... will you be calling her Shell as her nickname from you? I think it would be sweet. I am not a great auntie yet but I have high hopes that in a few years I will be. My oldest niece just turned 17 and her boyfriend proposed. They are planning on marrying in 3 years, they have been together since she was 14. So maybe in about 5 years or so I will be a proud great auntie myself :-) Now don't spoil your little Shell too much! lol

Thank you! She is coming through it like a champ! Her mother had preeclampsia, and they just couldn't wait, but she is also doing well. She's young and strong. I have a feeling the nickname may stick. It jjust seems so perfect for her! And of course I am going to spoile her. Rotten as rottten can be, although I think there may be competition to see who can spoil her the worst. Her daddy is absoloutly melted over her!
