You'd think I'd know this having the birds for 8 years, but I've always kept them in separate cages as they need different diets and stuff. However, I let them out of the cages today and the cockatiel went over and into the Sun Conure's cage and started taking it over...the conure hid from her...she eventually went back to her own cage and I wouldn't mind the two them hanging out, but I don't really want strange bird babies or anything:) So, am I ok with leaving them together?

Can they mate? Yes. Can they have children? No. I have a male lovebird and a male cockatiel who are mates and they make a very happy couple. Naturally they can't have children but they do have a nest and really do want to have babies. We always make jokes that one day they'll have lovatiels.

Different species of birds rarely mate but they can become bonded together as close friends. It might be best to keep them in separate cages during the night but let them play together during their free time. I have a sun conure who likes to spend his time with my 4 cockatiels but when I have to go out, the conure goes into his cage, the cockatiels into theirs. Enjoy your birds, they are wonderful companions.

They won't mate, but they do enjoy company of their own. Don't leave them alone, unless you know they are getting a long.
