Is it just me, or is the price of fruit expensive right now? I wanted to buy a whole watermelon at the supermarket and the price was $7.99. That seemed like alot to me! It's not as though the watermelons were even very large. So I looked at the pre cut watermelon and they were 99cents a pound. So it was like $4.00 for a quarter of a watermelon.
And strawberries....every now and then I do catch them on sale and it's not too bad. This week I got a one pound container of strawberries for $3.99 but it was buy one get one free. So I ended up with 2 pounds of strawberries for $3.99. That seemed pretty good.
How are the prices for fruit in your area and has the cost stopped you from buying any?

It always feels like fruit and veggies (or anything remotely healthy for you) are pretty highly-priced. Ridiculous. I'd probably eat healthier if that sort of thing was more affordable. The last time I went to the store, in fact, I kept eyeing some nice-looking honeydew melons, thought about even making a fruit salad. Even went as far as pondering making a salad (shock), but looked at the prices and changed my mind haha.

Exactly. No wonder America's considered the land of obesity lol. After my mad dash from the produce section, I went and grabbed box of mac and cheese, among other not-so-good-for-you items, as usual. Lame. Reminds me of the last (ever) diet I tried once, couldn't even afford it lol. Thanks for the BR, by the way. :)

Yes honeydew melon is expensive right now. I think it was $4.99. No way I'll pay that much! The cantaloupe melons were $2.59, I thought that was a little high also.

I've never seen a watermelon for more than $4.99. I usually go to a farmer's market, food lion or walmart and get my watermelons or I buy watermelons at my old neighbor's house for .50-$2.00 each. It only takes me about 30 minutes to drive out that way. I planted me some watermelons at my parents house. I can't wait for it to produce.

I think fruit is getting expensive. A couple of weeks ago, grapes were over $3.00 a pound...more than I am willing to pay for grapes. This week one of the stores has then on sale for less than a dollar a pound, but all the other fruits were ridiculously expensive. I guess the one really good sale is to reel us in so that we buy the one sale item and several other of the non-sale ones.

My friend and I were talking about the same thing the other day. I love fruit, but the prices have become ridiculous. It's almost $6.00 here for a watermelon smaller than a small basketball. Strawberries and grapes are pretty pricey right now too, but I can't remember how much they were. I'm thinking about $4.00 a pound maybe for strawberries.

Fruits are pretty reasonably priced here in India. No fruit is so highly priced that it prevents even any middle class families from buying it. All kinds of fruits are available here except the exotic ones. Mangoes are my favorites and price of mango is reasonably low.

Hey DCP,
I stopped even looking-When my son was little we used to buy him a bag of apples & oranges every week so he could have a healthy snack now if you get 'em by the bag the prices are somewhat acceptable but I personally don't like 'em like that so I would by myself a single here & there but it got to where the price of single's was just not acceptable when I can buy a six pack of yogurt or something processed much cheaper.
PS have you ever noticed that it's much cheaper to eat unhealthy foods?

I have noticed also that the price of fruit has definitely went up alot this year. I really don't know why. A small watermelon is $7.00 here in my area in Indiana. That is very expensive, I think, for a watermelon that is no bigger than a cantaloupe. I think the price on all food has gone up, for that matter though. It is awful.

Yes I know it. It is awful. I live far from a grocery store or fruit market or I would take the fruit back if it wasn't any good.

The prices of fruits are sky touching here. And it is worst when sometimes you are willing to pay that much amount and when you cut that fruit, you find that most part of that fruit is not worth eating or the fruit is not juicy but dry......

WOW! That is a lot. I know a lot of the citrus fruit has gone up because of winter storm damage to the trees. But the watermelon too? Are you sure it wasn't seedless? Those are always more expensive. I just bought strawberries and they were cheap. Under two dollars. I'm not sure if it was a full pound, but it wasn't the small quart size that's for sure.

There was only a sign that said $7.99, didn't say whether it was seedless watermelon or not. It just seemed really high to me so I skipped it.

Yes, I know. I have been waiting for the price of watermelon to go down so that I could buy one. I think that I am going to buy one this weekend regardless of the price. We eat a lot of fruit and it is just ridiculous to have to pay that much.
The watermelon range from $5.99-$7.99 in our area. I hate even paying $6 for one. I am still waiting for a $1.99 sale...lol
I suppose I will be waiting a long time for that.
I buy my strawberries buy one get one free all of the time. They always run that special here, so I just wait.

I guess I got lucky. At my grocery store I bought two watermelons because they were on sale for $3.99 each. I love watermelon and look for sales all the time. They were big too. At the same store last week I bought strawberries for .99 cents a pound.

Fruit costs are going wild this year. I can usually get watermelon for 1.99 this time of year. But, now it is up to 4.99. It seems like everything is getting highter. And, with all the strange weather, I think it is going to keep going higher.

Fruit around this time of year does go up in price. It is crazy how much they charge. I very seldom buy fruit anymore because it is so expensive, but I sure love to eat all kinds of fruit, especially watermelon and cantelope!

It is unfortunate when the price of fresh fruit and vegetables are so high. I buy whatever is on sale and usually only buy what is on sale. I also go to the farm market because they tend to have good prices as well. Right now, a whole seedless watermelon is $3.99 in western New York and strawberries are about $3.49 a pound. We are going to go strawberry picking next week and I am hoping they will be much cheaper. Another thing I do, is when the fruits or vegetables are on sale for a great price, is stock up and can or freeze them. I freeze watermelon in balls and use them for homemade sherbert or smoothies. I also freeze broccoli, berries, mashed bananas (for bread), rhubarb, just about anything except lettuce.

I've always wanted to go strawberry picking but have never done it!! Have you done it before? Do they charge you per pound that you pick or is it per container?

I have been as a child and I took my girls last summer. I do not remember for certain, but I do believe they charge per pound here. I remember as a child the farmer kidding me and saying he was going to weigh us before we went out picking and then weigh us again when we returned to see how many pounds we ate while picking. My one piece of advice is to wear old clothes, becasue try as you might, it is VERY difficult to avoid getting stains on them. Also, bring your own containers if possible, as they will let you use theirs, but they will charge you to keep them.

I go to my local farmers market for my fruit and veggies. I am paying 56 cents a LBS for apples, I just bought a huge watermelon (about 14 LBS) for $5, I never pay more then $3 for 2 LBS of strawberries. I keep a well stocked fridge of fruits and veggies as I am a big lover of fresh whole foods. My weekly bill for a full shop at the farmers market is about $20.

I am from india and fortunately in india the prices of fruits are comparitively very cheap. Moreover with large groups like reliance and subhiksha coming in the food market the competition has intensified and consequently prices have dropped, quality improved and the consumer has been a benificiary. The prices here today are lichi Rs 35 a kg. Mangos Rs 40 a kg. Watermelon Rs 7 a kg. One dollar equals 40 indian ruppees.

WOW! I can't say what the other stores in our area is like but at Wal-Mart our watermelons are about $3.99 or 4.99.
I'm not sure what our strawberries are right now but I think they're around two dollars.

The prices are off the charts-and I think they are going to get worse. I just heard on our local newscast yesterday that since we are having a drought, prices are going to rise. Maybe it's just me, but it seems that everyone is looking for a reason(or excuse) to raise prices on everything now.

Dear friend,
Nice thing to share.
In this occasion i am thanking god for being me an Indian. 1 American dollar mean 42 Indian rupees. rupees is our currency. And also here thing are weighted in Kilograms. 1 kilogram is equal to 2.2 pounds.
Now i am coming to point......
Here a watermelon weights almost 10 kilogram. And the rate of watermelon for one kilogram is about 10 rupees. So for a average one only cost 100 indian rupees. That is only 2.35 american dollars. But in your country about 8 dollars. That is about 340 indian rupees.
We can buy around 3 ones.
That is why I said thanks to god first......
Here the rate of strawberry is around 150-200 Indian rupees. This is the rate in Kerala, a small state of india. But in Punjab, another small state of india, the rate of strawberry is only 25 Indian rupees. Because this state is main in cultivating strawberry....
In your country strawberry rates 4 dollars its equal to 170 indian rupees. So which is similiar to both our countries. But to Punjab both of us are too high.
Then here for fruits not more than 50 Indian rupees. That is always less than a dollar........
So there is any thing wrong for saying thanks to god at begining........?
Thank you dear friend for giving a chance to express my happiness for being an Indian........
Keep in touch my friend......
