What do you prefer stairs or elevator to climb up and climb down?

I have seen many people in the offices, work place using 'Lift'/'elevator' to climb up even for a floor or two. They do not bother to use stairs. Even for climbing down people use 'lift' not stairs. I think that by not using stairs, they not only waste electricity but I think it is also not good for health ...not to exert youself. While going for few floors I prefer to take stairs and while climbing down I prefer not to use 'lift'at all in offices etc.. What do you do in such cases...do you use stairs or take 'lift' to climb up and climb down? Please share your thoughts and experience on this. thanks.

hi deepak, firstly, this is a very pertinent post. thanx for starting this. my office has 6 floors and cardiology dept. is in 4 th floor. my office is in the ground floor but i have to shuttle between mostly 4th and ground and on some occasions i have to visit all the floors. i always try to use stairs while going up or coming down but sometimes when i am in a hurry i have to take the lift. previously, things were different though, i always used the lift but soo i realised if i could avoid it i can actually burn up calories!! deepak, this little exercise makes me feel so better. sometimes, when i donot have much work i just have a round through the hospital. i really appreciate your point and the fact that you do it yourself. this little bit of consciousness should be there and especially when our health is concerned. have a nice day. PS; this reminds me, i need to go on rounds...LOl..

Well, I seldom use the stairs if there are lifts available. To me it much quicker if I use the lift, furthermore I have a lot of work to get done. Time is of essence to me. However, I admit that using the stairs contribute to a healthy lifestyle and we can keep fit even if we don't do any other exercises. I used to work in air-conditioned office. If I use the stairs I will sweat and when re-entering the air-conditioned room I am afraid I will disturb others with my body odor. But during evenings, I went back by bus and I had to walk about one kilometer to the bus stop. After that I have to walk again about 500 meters from the bus stop to my home. So basically I still have exercise daily. That's from me. Thanks.

OK! You prefer lift, because you do not want to sweat. I think most of us will do the same thing, if lift is available. Thanks for your reply. :)

Hi Deepak, good morning Well as my office is in 2nd floor i hardly make use of lift, but when have meetings we usually have it in 8th floor, so at that time i prefer lift. If given a choice to go by lift or elevator, i would prefer lift because i am so scared of elevators:)..because i some how i feel that my legs will get stuck in that...among all going by walk is better right..what to do we have all these things in office so we have to make use of all these comforts right...sometimes but should not get habituated ^_^ Thanks bye and have a nice day.... Vani.

If it is in office, how much electricity does it waste? The lift is always operating. Productivity counts more. Imagine one need to climb up flights of stairs which takes tens of minutes and end up sweating and panting when one finally reach the office? If it is just a floor or two, I would go for the stairs if it is conveniently in place. However, most of the times, the lift is more accessible. Perhaps the lift operator should make it such that the lifts operates only from level 3 onwards.

Hi Deepak! I too am one of the elavator users. It is convient and faster than using the stairs. There are other ways of exercise and ways to take care of health. I would rather prefer to use a Gym.

If it were only a few floors i would use the stairs. I am acaullu pretty out of shape and it wouldnt hurt me to use the stairs. LOL I have encountered this in my Gynecologists office, they are on the seond floor so there are probualy 40 stairs and they have a lift there as well. when i would go there for my visits during my pregnancy i used the stairs to go up and down until i just got too pregnant. LOL it was hard to climb that many stairs. But when leaving i would still go down them.

I should be saying that I prefer the stairs for exercise. But I have to admit for anything higher than one floor, or if I am carrying packages, I take a lift. We don't have many high rise stores in Adelaide, at least not in the suburbs.

I try to use the stairs whenever I can. If I have to go up to a really really high floor, then of course I'll use the elevator, or if I have something really heavy to carry. If I'm just going up a few floors though, I just use the stairs cause many times it's quicker than waiting around on the elevator, and it also gives me some exercise!

I used to use the elevator at all times. Stairs and me just didn't get on LOL. In our apartment building, we live on the ground floor. The laundry room is on the second floor. I take the elevator up because the laundry basket does get quite heavy, plus I'm hauling a huge bottle of Fabric detergent with me too. But coming back down I use the stairs. When I go back up to swap the clothes from the washer to the dryer, I use the stairs, and same when I go up to collect the clothes. I have also been known to struggle back down the stairs with a full basket of clean laundry too lol. If there aren't too many steps someplace that we go, I'll use them. However if we're like ten floors or something, I use the elevator.

I use elevator if my office at work is on above third floor. To save time and effort to use stairs. But if my office is at the 2nd floor i might as well use the stairs to give space to the elevator user on the higher floors and to excercise my legs and feet as well.

Good one to discuss..I can climb stairs for 2-3 floor not more than that because i will get tired and exhausted.Actually i dont like to wait near the lift specially while shopping where people queue in large numbers waiting for the lift anxiously as i feel better to climb through stairs rather to wait.

Even climbing 2-3 floors is OK. But one should not forget the habit of using stairs. Yes, you are right, sometimes...it becomes very boring and disgusting to wait for the lift....by the time one can reach upstairs and to its destination. Thanks fo liking the discussions. Have a Nice Day! depak

I use the stairs whenever I can. It's especially important for me to use the stairs if I haven't been to the gym. Stairs are great exercise.

I take the stairs most of the time. I think the worst thing is when I see people take the elevator to the 2nd or 3rd floor of the gym to play racquet ball or walk the indoor track.

From one side the elevator is not bad. If you see it from the other side, you might think of walk on stairs. Because walking by stairs it's a kind of sport;)

Taking the stairs is a good way to get a little excerise. I will take the stairs if I'm able... Uou can also have a little time to yourself even for that small amount of time. It's a waste in many ways to be lazy but I guess, it's up to the person. Many are tired...I suppose!

I would prefer elevators only because I am a lazy person lol...in the past I use to work on the 8th floor and it was an old building in a University and I had to walk up and down those stairs everyday and sometimes more than once and it was a killer but now they put one in when I don't have to be there anymore......
