Most Hated Books

I hate many many books. It's funny to be so picky, and yet love reading. Here are a few of the books that I hate: 1. What To Expect When You're Expecting I think that this book has caused more problems for women than it has helped! Every year, there's a new edition of it. Any authors out there, please write a book to compete with this. (Here at the used book store, there are literally 100 copies of this book.) 2. The Alchemist LOL, this is a great book and an awful book. I think that it is certainly an interesting read. Magical realism died in the 1980's, thank goodness. The other reason I hate this book is because it's written in the children's prose style. Ok, done, please hate back if you wish.

My most hated books are 1984. As I once remarked to a friend "of all the books I didn't read for that class, why wasn't that one of them?" I understand it's an important book about the dangers of government control, but I hate it. A close runner up is As I Lay Dying. It's awful. I don't think it has any excuses.

Siddhartha by Herman Hesse is great, as are his other books. Nice choice.

Ha, why do you hate 1984? And what books do you like?

I think part of it is that my boyfriend of one year was in basic training when I read 1984, so I wasn't the happiest person at the time anyway. The situation just gets continually worse. There's no hope at all, it's terribly depressing. A few of my favorites are East of Eden by Steinbeck, Siddartha by Hesse, and Catch-22 by Heller.

Books that I don't hate but I just don't get are the Russian masterpieces (such as War and Peace, Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment). Especially the first one I mentioned is absolutely huge. But I don't feel like I gained anything by reading it (but I'm sure that's just me as many people love it). Brothers Karamazov would have been the most interesting between the three but for the bitter ending. I cannot get why the author has allowed Dmitri to be condemned for a crime he never committed. As for Crime and Punishment that is probably the one I dislike most of all, mostly because of the guy's theory about how some superior beings are allowed to do whatever they please including kill some others. I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with me though :)

With Crime and Punishment, I think that Dostoyevsky is trying to point out that Raskolnikov is in the wrong. There's a lot of Christian overtones in that book that people tend to miss out on. Maybe it's just the translation, too. Here's one thing I learned about that book: It's "crime, and punishment." not "Crime and Punishment". (like, "a day at the park, and a night at home", instead of "Parks and Recreation") Weird to think about but when you read the title like that, it changes the book a bit. If that doesn't make sense, let me know.

I don't know if I can think of any book specifically that I hate but two genres that I don't like are fantasy and women's romance novels. I just don't get the fantasy thrill. I know that lots of people love these made up worlds, but I think there are enough interesting things in the real world not to have to create imaginary ones. I also dislike romance novels for the same reason: not realistic. Women need to be strong and read novels about conquering the world, not having some man create the perfect life for them.

Honestly, I can't take any Charles Dickens books... YAWN! I mean i know back then they were paid by the word but he spent so much time trying to get a pay cheque that his books put me to sleep. i know I might take flack for this but I also hate Shakespeare. i don't know whether it was because I had it drilled in my head for 4 years in highschool but I hate him terribly lol!

What about seeing a shakespearean play? I think that English teachers just don't teach it correctly.

I can't stand Dickens either...I love classic literature, but this is one author I just can't get behind...Boring books.
