LYING: is it necessary sometimes?

well we all say that we like people to tell us the truth, and we all hate to lie and all that. But do you think that sometimes it's necessary to lie? is lying a necessary resource that you must use now and then in your lives in order to keep everything under control? i think we're all a bit hipocritical when it comes to this, because i think we all hate liars but i have never met one person who never lies at all.
what are your thoughts on this?

I do think we can live without lying but it is very difficult! Omissions of truth or thinking very carefully about the way you phrase things is one thing but personally I think that is just the same as lying! You know what , this discussion has really made me think cos I hate to lie and I hate to be lied to - but we all have to tell little white lies occassionally! xxx

that's the contradiction i mentioned earlier: we all hate liars and lying, but we all do it sooner or later....human nature.

Yes, as long as it's not a habit and you do it to avoid hurting people or to protect yourself, i don't see it as something bad. Now if you do it deliberately then it's different, because you hurt people knowing that you are going to and you don't care.

I was thinking about this yesterday. It came to me when I was watching Seinfeld. In the show, they go to a friend's house to see baby. The baby is ugly and the guy says that they will never know because no one will ever tell them the truth. They say it's a must-lie situation. I use to lie a lot until I realized that the best way out of a situation that I don't belong in is not get involved in one by lying! From their I never lied. Although sometimes it hurts me telling people the truth they've got to realize that it's better that I tell them me than another friend or stranger. People get hurt when hearing the truth but what they don't realize is that the person that says the truth to them gets hurt too.

I think I am a honest person, but I do lie sometimes to my BF. I will telling I am some place when I am not. He is a clinger, and I sometimes just need quite time to myself.

Yes, i know what you mean. Careful with that though venshida, because if he catches you in one of those lies you might get in trouble. But i understand your reasons.

lying is quiet necessary sometimes.
take a child as an example when a child asks where do children come from we just cant say the truth that they came from __-__
but lying is a sin but for temporary use
for not hurting someone
if a lie hurts someone its a sin
lying once is ok twice to two ppl is bit an extra but lying all the time is complete sin

what man answers this question honestly:
Do I look fat in these pants?
How's my hair?
And when we are invited to dinner nobody will admit to hating the dish the hostess has cooked, we all eat it, but don't ask for seconds.
But these are lies not meant to keep us out of trouble, we don't say these lies to harm others but rather to spare the feelings of our loved ones. And I bet everyone tells those kinds of lies more often than not.
We would be considered impolite if we told the truth on stuff like this.

Yeah, if we were plain honest all the time we would get in trouble all the time LOL. "mom your meal stinks" LOL...can you even imagine her reaction? I don't wanna push it!

interesting magica. what can be the truth for you mightn't be for someone else. You're right. But i was referring myself about lying according to your own opinion...because nobody lies without being aware of it, lying is something you do on purpose.

I really hate liars especially those who fabricate things to suit their own purposes. I may hate lying but there are times that I lied by ommission because it was necessary to keep the confidentially of some transactions and to keep the confidences that some of my friends told me. I don't fabricate but I have learned to avoid saying things and omitting things which is I think is also lying.

yes, omitting can be lying sometimes....anyway we ALL lie one time or another...that would prove it's more necessary for humans than we think...

I agree with you that we all lie sometimes. But I am not prepared to just accept that it is necessary. I hate it when I lie and it will eat at me until I do something about it. Lieing just creates more trouble down the road. I know what you are getting at, we all think that a little lie to smooth something over at a particular moment from time to time..... but I think someone always gets hurt. I never want to be the reason someone gets hurt.

Yes,
One way or other you have to lie . or circumstances make you tell tell lie.
It is very diffcult to adjust yourself if you have lied
once, then you to tell more lies to make people to beleive your earlier lie.
Life is full of adjustments. To educate yourself vesit:
