Life jackets and helmets.

I was curious as to how many people really wore a helmet every time they rode on a motorcycle or bicycle? What about wearing life jackets every time you go boating?
I always wear a helmet on motorcycles, but have to admit that I don't wear one when riding a bicycle. I usually only ride on park paths or thru our neighborhood, though. If I road on more streets I would probably wear one. I also hate wearing life jackets on a boat, unless I am skiing or being pulled on a tube or something.

Having a husband that has been in law enforcement for over 20 years, we always wear motorcycle helments and also life jackets when we go out boating or fishing. He has seen too many accidents first hand. I can remember him coming home telling me gross details several times and he always tells the kids that he does't want to have to pick up their brains off the road if they balk about buckling up in the car.
On the river or lakes here, there have been too many accidents caused because people are out drinking in the boats and going too fast or just get plain careless. I look at it as for protection for myself against the fools out there.
We do not use helments when riding regular bikes. We usually don't go far when we do ride, mainly stay in our neighborhood and ride in the parks when we go camping.

Yeah, I've seen some of those accidents where the motorcycle wrecked and the person got really messed up. I always wear one, but lately (it's been mid 90s here) I've seen quite a few people without them. The way people drive around here, though, I'm scared half of the time just driving my car, much less something smaller with no protection.
On bicycles we don't wear helmets since we just ride in parks or the neighborhood. If we were to take them on the road I'd be wearing them. It was never an issue when I was growing up. Trying to keep track of what is law and what isn't can get confusing since the two states we bike in have different rules. lol

Yeah, that was something I didn't think about. Especially if you're riding turrain, hills, mud, gavel and so on. I know it's easy to get hurt one those if you mess around. Accidents can happen anyehere, but I've seen people ride them as if the devil was right behind them.

Helmets are optional here but when I get on a motorcycle I always wear one. For kids under 18 they are mandatory for motorcycles and bicycles. If you are over 18 you can do what you want. As far as life vest and jackets, all the rivers in the area are patrolled and if you are seen without one while a boat is moving, it is a huge fine.

I am a certified neurotic about the wearing of helmets and life jackets. Of course, spending 28 years seeing the tragic results of not wearing helmtets and life jackets has influenced my behavior! I cannot be on a boat without having a life jacket on. As for motorcycles, when I was in my early 20's and in college, I thought they were the greatest things since sliced bread. Having worked a while as nurse, I quickly grew to realize that I wanted no part of them...and today I won't ride one! I have stood for hours gently removing with tweezers small rock and road grime from the wounds of those who have wrecked on motorcycles (even with helmets!) I just can't get on one now!

This all for safety of human life. If one should take precautions then there is no harm in wearing a helmet plus jacket.

I wear helmets on motorcycles, but not in bikes. I've never worn a helmet on a bicycle, and I don't really plan to.
I'm also not fond of wearing life vest on boats. I was once knocked overboard while out on the boat with my family and I was wearing a life vest. It restricted my ability to swim. Had I been able to swim, I would have been able to get back on the boat on my own. As it was, my family had to pull in all of their fishing lines and turn the boat around to get me.

I've never gone boating and I can't ride motorcycles, so I wonder if I'm eligible to post under this topic, but I will say that when I start riding bikes, I'd prefer not to wear helmets because they seem like a nuisance to me.

I don't wear a helmet when riding a bicycle, but I do when riding a motorcycle. I also have never worn a life jacket while boating, although there is always some sort of flotation devise available. I am a strong swimmer though, and depending on the situation, would recommend that those who are not good swimmers might want to wear one.

As you have said, helmets and Jackets are the life saving ones and there should be no harm in wearing them. In many country, i do see many of them dont wearing the helmet when they ride their motorbikes.
Recently, our state Government in our Country, has made wearing the helmet a compulsory. Even after that, I dont see many wearing the helmet. They should understand that Helmet is just for THEIR safety and try to wear them whenever possible.

I am not sure of the rules about boating but I think it is compulsory to wear life jackets here aswell, I live in Tasmania Australia
