Who named your first born? Was it preconceived or selected after his/her birth? What does it mean? And was there anything special about it? Is there any custom related to naming a baby in your family?

My Fist Son was going to be named after my Father, long before I ever really thought to have a child. My older sisters had fought so hard and long over the use of the name that they made an agreement never to use it either one. I made no such agreement with them as they are 10 and 11 years older then I. But I have always known of this feud, so when I did get pregnant with my fist son, I kept quiet about my intentions to use the name Benjamin, and it was not until after the birth certificate was signed that I let them know his name. To say they were a tad upset was an understatement, but once they held Ben, I was forgiven.

Kamran, Benjamin is actually Hebrew in origin and means Son of the right hand. I have aways love it, my father was the first born son.. As far as intelligent in how I had to handle the name situation with my sisters, I learned in growing up watching them. They were awful violent with each other. Oh my Gosh the fight would start and I would find a table to hide under and watch the fur fly.

LOL! you were quite mindful about naming your son, Angelwhispers and did very well. very intelligent, I must say:-) It's nice that how love of nephew could calm your sisters as they held him, that's beautiful. My son is named after two of his ancestors. Would you mind if I ask you what Benjamin mean? I hope you won't mind as I am not a native and It interests me to know the meaning of a name:-) Thanks for sharing, Angelwhispers:-)

Ah! I see why I couldn't know Benjamin's meaning myself earlier. Actually I knew the meaning but from actual Hebrew form. I think, I should always see a English name by subtracting "J" from it to understand it's meaning as it appears that many basically Hebrew names are taken in English with addition of 'j', like Jesus, Jacob, Joseph etc. Thanks for putting my attention to that, Angelwhispers!:-) So, you have been wise and intelligent from very early stage in life by avoiding conflicts:-) It's sometimes interesting to poke into fight, specially verbal, to calm other people down. Thanks for explaining, Angelwhispers:-), I think I have many things to learn from your wisdom!=P

Our Chinese have a different name method. Some even look up the dictionary to select good words. I name my boy as "Yong Xi", it means forever hope:) I hope he will have a bright future.

I like my son will have an English name, too. But I haven't thought it out which is suitable for him. Usually we will have English names when we are studying English. Because at that time English teachers will call your English names. So if I can't think out a good English name for him, then he can decide it by himself when he grows up:)

I thought for sure I was having a girl, so I told my husband he could name the baby if it's a boy. It was a boy, and he named him after he was born. I believe you should see the baby before you pick a name, find a name to match the personality, even if he's just a few hours old. My son's name fits him good. His middle name though was after my best friend who passed away 1 month before he was born. That name also fits him to a tee. After finding the meaning in the book of baby names, still fits him!

How very interesting, KatieS! the whole naming process of your baby. So you made a deal that if it's a girl, you will name her and if it's a boy, your husbnad will name him? How can one make an educated guess about personality of a baby! I know for me there are other ways, So what personality you figured out about him? It's nice that he merits his name. Thanks so much for sharing, KatieS:-)

Well, after holding him and trying the name my husband chose on him a couple of times, he just fit it I guess. Especially when my friends name fit in the middle. We might have just gotten lucky, but I can't think of any other name that would have fit.

Our daughter is named Alexi Samantha Kruger. Alexi comes from a band my husband likes and that is the name of the lead singer. Samantha is my first name (and it's also because we couldn't agree on a middle name). And also because her initials would spell ASK lol

That's interesting as well as innovative, the composition, djbizmonkey34:-) Initials are also very interesting, as it's easy to address her as ASK. I wonder if there can be a fun situation where somebody asks you her name and you tell them 'ask' and they will ask again and you will repeat 'ask' LOL. That could be an interesting fun practice, try it:-) Does samantha and kruger have meaning? I am asking because I am not native speaker and don't know if they carry meanings, I hope you won't mind! Thanks for sharing, djbizmonkey34:-)

The name of my daughter is RYKHAIL ROSE, her nickname is FABIA. How did i come up with her name is a bit complicated. *smiles*. In our family all of our names starts w/ letter R, so as expected I wanted that my child's name will start with letter R as well. So why Rykhail Rose. Okay, we call my mom Rose, since my baby is the first granddaughter my mom wants her name to be in my baby's name. Both my brothers' middle names are Rey and we call my dad Ric, so I combined the Rey & Ric in Ryk..changed the I w/ Y (took it from Rey) and changed letter C w/ K (since i like letter K...*smiles*). My baby is my angel, a gift from God, heaven sent that's why I put HAIL. To combined them all, I came up with Rykhail Rose. I mentioned that her nickname is FABIA, well it came from the movie "Finding Nemo" one of my fave animated movies when I was pregnant. One of the fish said Fabio instead of Nemo, so right that moment my brother said that if it's a boy will call him Fabio, if a girl Fabia. So she ended up having a nickname Fabia..LOL!! Complicated no? oww! that was a long explanation..sooweeee for that! *smiles* take care. cheers! :D

Hello fab315!:-) Thank you very much for sharing these very interesting details about naming your baby girl with us. It seems that it really has been a very interesting and yet complicated task/process to name your baby. In our family too, all names start with the letter 'S' and it has been so for over a thousand years now, interesting isn't it? Thanks again for sharing, fab315!:-)

It's actually more than a thousand years, fab315, and not only first letter but actually, a whole four letters word is part of a boy name and five letter word is part of every girl name. So, yes, my son also has the same name for him:-)

All of my children were named before they were born. My oldest daughter got her name from a couple of people. Part of her first name came from a good high school friend of mine. The second part of her name came from another friend. Her middle name is after me and my mom. We all have the same middle name. I guess it's something me and my mom started. The first born female gets our middle name as her middle name.

When I was 8 years old I knew that my first born child's name was going to be Jerry (or some spelling of it) no matter if girl or boy. When my first child was born, she was indeed named Geri and her middle name Jo was after my grandfather Joseph. Thank you for asking ~Donna

My partner & i named our baby, we had her named picked out well before we even decided to have kids :) There aren't any family rules or anything to naming kids here as far as i know - i know some cultures have what seems like, set rules about naming children after family members but it's not like that here in Oz. You just name them however you like! My daughter's first name is the name of my late grandmother (it's also my Mum's middle name just spelt a little different) & then her 2nd name is after my partner's Nana - although i don't think she was very happy about that coz someone else in the family had already used her name - ah well, it wasn't up to her anyway!

It's perfectly all right if they are classic names, Gemmygirl1!, as a name should be beautiful whether or not it's classic. It seems that you worked out pretty good formula to name your kids (combining Nana's names:-)). We too named our son with classic names but they are very beautiful and ever green, the combination is not common, though. Thanks for sharing, Gemmygirl1:-)

With my daughter I had picked out a name, then about a week before she was born another name popped into my head. When she was born I knew why the name came to me, it fits her perfect. With my son I didn't name him till he was a little over a day old. I couldn't pick a name for him, so he now has two first names instead of the traditional one. His name has great meaning to it and fits him perfectly too. If I were to have another child I already have the name picked out for both a boy or a girl.

I see that you want another child or at least are prepared for it to come:-) Thanks for sharing:-)

I am the one who gave name to my first daughter. I already made a deal with my husband If the baby 's girl, I gave a name but if the baby's boy my husband would give a name. My first daughter full name is creshaly beau hermances. her first name means mixing between my name, my daughter name and name of our prophet wife. her middle name I found from beautifull and I abbreviate it and her last name is my husband last name. and there's no tradition for naming the babies in my family so we might give our babies name in free way.

Me, the Daddy, chose the names for our 2 sons. Being a big fan of Manchester United, I named my eldest son Ryan after Ryan Giggs who scored a wonder goal against Arsenal in the FA Cup semi-final in 1999. Today, Giggs is still playing and I would proudly point to him how his name came about. My wife thought that I shouldn't have named him after a footballer. My second son, Regan, was found in a Baby Names book. Both of us thought it was a perfect name for him. Many people we know still tease that he is gonna be the future president (after the former US President, Ronald Reagan). Coincidentally, both Ryan and Regan are names of the same meaning - "litle king", and they truly live up to their names. My little girl, Rowena, was a tricky pick. The whole family voted for this name, even though the meaning to the name doesn't sound good - it means 'white mane'. We thought we aren't going to have a daughter with white hair! We shortlised names like Fiona, Cecilia, etc. Finally, we thought since her elder brothers have names that start with letter 'R', might as well she has the name with a 'R'. I prefer to call her Wena for short.

I hope she will give some beautiful meaning to the name. Thanks again for sharing all this with us, Puffer!:-)

well,as i stated already that i was attached to my younger brother like as a mother with his son. He was born in saudiarabia in a country where only i was with my mother to take care and for all kind of chores :) My father asked me to name my brother, and i suggested a name from 99 names of Allah. Thats "ARHAM" means "a person who is kind". My dad modified it more "Muhammad Arham" as my elder brother's name is "Muhammad Aslam",so we decided to name him. Initially when he wasnt born,we decided to name him "Muhammad Islam" as my other bro's name was ASLAM,but everyone there said that when you will be going back to your country obviously you will have to register this baby's name as well and 'ASLAM' and 'ISLAM',spell same only with a difference of 'A' and 'I'.So this can create a problem for you people,so then i suggested this name and really this works :) I personally believe that the name really effets your personality as well :) And indeed we are seeing the results,my this brother is the most kind one in our whole family :) The names should contain a good meaning,so it puts up a positive effect on your child .

My hubby and I decided together the names for our children. Well, my first child's name was pre picked before she arrived. Her name was my great grandmothers name, which is pretty rare. My seconds first name was pre picked but her middle was chosen the day she was born. My third name was picked out before she was even conceived.

actually I don't have a baby yet. But if we talking about a name of a baby, I think our parents or maybe all the parents in the world want to give their baby the best name that they can give. My parents give me name Zahra. It was Arabic phrase. It means "beautifull". And I'm so gratefull with my parents for giving me such a great name:)
