Will using a hard board below the laptop dissipate the heat.

I was told that I should not keep my laptop on my lap or on a cushion as they mold to the bottom and prevent heat dissipation, instead it should always be on a hard surface so that the base remains a little elevated. Would keeping my laptop on a writing board help?

Yes, If you use your laptop on your bed, sofa or on your lap you are likely to block the vents and prevent the laptop cooling its self down. There is a tray available that you plug into the USB port which powers 4 fans in the tray to cool the laptop.

I use a serving tray like the ones you use to serve breakfast in bed. It makes a nice little portable office with no hassles or set up. About the cooling trays... They work just fine however they pull your battery down quick and serve little purpose unless you are doing something CPU intensive like converting videos. If you want a little more cooling power just elevate the back of the laptop so the heat can escape faster from under the unit.

yes i have seen it but i got a small laptop so that it would be convenient to use in anywhere, i don't want to increase it's weight or size by attaching this device. any other suggestions so that I can keep my laptop portable and use it sitting on my bed also.

Oops forgot.
I have seen a cooled "Chilling Pad" that you can use for those video conversion sessions. It pumps chilled water through the base to cool the air passing over it thereby allowing your CPU fan to pull in cooler air to begin with. It of course is a plug powered unit and not too easy to use with a portable. So you might as well convert that copy of 101 Dalmations on a desktop.

Hi dbhattji.Putting your laptop on your lap will cause a heat transfer to your body and since your lap is near to your reproductive area, heat would transmit to it causing infertility as sperm cells for male is sensitive to heat.So it would consequently lead to low sperm count.
Additionally, your laptop might overheat due to the blockage of the cooling ability of fan. I suggest you put your laptop in a hard surface so the fan could breath and cool your laptop.I also suggest that you visit your local dealer for PCs, one of the innovation today is a laptop cooler pad, placed on the base of laptop. It is made of a hard plastic material that supplies its power connected from your USB port. So aside from being an energy saver device, it cools your laptop faster than the usual fan of your laptop.
Writing board could be of help, I don't see why as it is a hard surface. But better make a fixed based hard surface of your machine to preven all the disadvantages I mentioned above.
Cheers...

Yes it is! You know how keyboards are made, that's the same material and it has at least 2-3 fans that will be enabled to work if you attachthe USB to your laptop. Very convenient and If I am not mistaken, it is now available in the PC shops. I didnt buy mine in the Phils., I bought it in Singapore when I accompanied my sister for her medical work up.
I think you should try it, it is so beneficial...Ok cheers, happy my lotting!

of course it will help..... if you keep it on a soft surface, the vent gets blocked and the heat sink is not that effective.. keeping it on a hard surface helps...
if you want even more colling, keep a hardbound book under your laptop and balance your laptop on it... be careful not to block any vents.. this will help a lot in cooling..

That's true. Putting your laptop on soft surfaces such as the bed or on your lap blocks the vents underneath the unit. You may wanna buy a laptop cooler which attaches to the base of your laptop if you really need to be on bed while working with your laptop. Cheers! Happy Posting
