Yes we hated it but we need it in our cooking. Can you imagine cooking without onions? So better cry while slicing it than no onions at all.

Chopping onions makes us cry because the acid from the onions irritates our eyes which causes as to cry. The trick in chopping onions is you soak it first in water for a few minutes before you chop it you will see difference... Happy cooking hehe

It is the stong juices of the raw onion that irritates the eyes. I was taught the proper way of peeling the cutting the onion so this does not occur though. Most people cut both end off the onion before they peel it and that is where they go wrong u only cut one end off then peel and for some reason the jiuces of the onion do not get air born so bad and dont get into the eye. It really does work as i practice it all the time. Hope this helps you.

I think this is a misconception that you cry when you chop onions. LOL. Just kidding, well all have explained why does it occur, and tell you what's the technique so that you'll be able to resist crying while chopping Onions. My opinion would be hire a maid, a cook so that you don't have to chop or onions or better yet order take out foods. imho.

LOL. that's a nice idea!, anyway, I am used to it now. I don't know why I don't get used to it before, well, it's our business you know? peeling onions and then sell. though my parents were the one who's doing that.

Yeah, you can get onions that are sweet instead of a strong ones. I guess you can tell by how riped they are.

Yes, there are sweet onions because I have eaten them before and I have cleaned them too. They are not strong tasting when you eat them and when you clean them up, you don't cry at all.

There is a better way to avoid shedding tears while chopping onions, or garlic. There is a chopping tools, i`m sure it is available in most convinient store. All you need is just peel onion`s outer skin and put them in the chopping box, and start chopping, besides you can chop a lot more than using knife. Then you can put those ready chopped onions in a box, store it in refrigerator, and the onion can be used everytime you start cooking. It save times and energy. Plus finger free of onions smell, and no more tears. Another tips to get rid of onion smell out of our finger is. whenever you have finished the onion job, wiped your finger in stainless steel washing sink, thoroughly, then wash your hand with soap and water, guarantee the smell wont stay along at all. Hope this would help a bit. Cheers.

You can try to wear a goggles while chopping onions. LOL just kidding. You can actually stop crying when chopping onions by placing a lighted candle beside your chopping board. The lighted fire on the candle will be able to burn the gas which is produced by the chopped onions. Try it. And you will love chopping onions than before. Good luck ^^.

There's one thing that you can do so you'll not cry while chopping onions. Your salt, wether on what kind of container the salt is contained (wether on a glass or a star margarine container or whatever), place that container just infront of you (without the cover of the container), exactly on the same position as your eyes, then chop onions as many as you want. The scientific explanation for that is.. ummm.... well.. seems I forgot it already. :D But the one who teaches me that is the Mother of my friend, while i'm helping on their cooking coz I don't have anything to do in my life at that time. =)

The Take Home Chef Curtis Stone saids to chew gum while cutting onions. The girl that he was cooking with that day said it actually worked. Another thing you might try is placing your onion in the freezer for fifteen minutes before you chop it. I know for sure that this works because I have tried it. Good Luck.

I really don't know exactly but I think there is some substance being released as the onion is cut which causes tears in the eyes. I do know however that when you cut the onions inside water you don't get the tears in your eyes.

I rarely have a problem with onions. First, when I am peeling the onion I am squatting down at the garbage can under the kitchen sink. Since my head is not inside the cupboard, the aroma is contained. Then I rinse both my knife and the onion in cold water before I cut it. It works every time.

try to put a tiny piece of bread at the tip of your knife... my dad told me to do that and it worked... the bread absords the onions smell or juice that comes out whenever you sliced or chopped them. if not just put a small piece near the onions that you cut...
