I often see this in movies. An intruder tries to break into the house. Before he decides to utilize the tools of his trade, he will first check under the flowerpot. Or the mat. Or the -fill in the blank-. I don't think the practice of keeping a spare key somewhere outside is common in Singapore. I don't know a single person who does that here (not that they might admit lol). But do you? Do you keep a spare key somewhere outside? - just in case you forgot your keys or lose them? If you do, why do you do it? Is the risk really worth it? What if an intruder discover your favorite flowerpot? :P Do share your thoughts. ;-)

We are four in the family and all four of us got a key of our own. So it is not necessary for us to hide the key anywhere.

I wish i could do that. But in my country, no way... I believe intruder nowadays are getting smarter and smarter. They will do some background research before they taking their actions (since they have so much of free time). They will observe when will u usually come back, is anybody home during weekend, how many people staying, any valuable stuff inside the house that worth breaking in..

Hello, wizard,it seems that you really lose your control, may be we will see you have 50 discussions a day,:P. I do not hide my key under the flowerpot or anywhere outside my home,it is too dangerous doing this,it does not really matter if i forget to bring the key as i can wait for my brothers to come back.

No more my ladies. I was doing an experiment and I thought the earning algo has changed to pay more for discussions. Turned out that I am so terribly wrong. I am SO disappointed with my earnings yesterday when I posted 6-7 discussions. Seems that I wasted all my time. I am sulking now. Anyone gonna give me a kiss?

I wish I could but there is no flowerpots in my home. Shall I just hide the key under any flowerpot I can find around my neighbourhood? I only afraid when I need it, the key is no longer there. Hiding under the flowerpot perhaps is a good way but it definitely gives away the unit should the key be found. I keep my spare keys in two other homes. When I forgot my keys, all I need is a phone call and I would go get the keys. At worst, I just loiter around until late night to be home. Definitely, I will be able to get into the house then. The most I just put up at my sister's place.

Yup, and I know that it is a security risk. I've been thinking of have a duplicate key for each household member so that we don't need to leave the key on the round table in our porch. That sure is a cute practice of keeping the house key. If an intruder comes, he can find the key at once. But still, we are doing it. But I am really bothered by this practice; I guess we have to devise a better plan to secure our house from intruders rather than hiding the key where the intruder is most likely to find.

We usually put our keys inside the house and it is close to the door and in the kitchen too. We have lots of keys and i know its safe. We cant put keys outside because if you do that it might be somebody can find it and come inside, its dangerous.

I dont keep extra keys any where outside. I just dont trust people these days. Too many homes are broken into daily. A lot of people have bars on their windows and a locked bared door in addition to the regular door. I used to have a car which had a key holder hidden in the fender well of one of the tires. It was there so long I had forgotten about it till we accidently found it while working on the car.

I'm not even sure if that is safe enough to do nowadays. I have never put a spare key under a flowerpot. My husband has a key and I have a key and if we ever get locked out then our landlord has a spare (not sure if that is even a good thing either LOL). We have been locked out once (and we couldn't get hold of the landlord - it was superbowl night) and my husband (Mr Macgyver - not sure if you have seen that tv program) was able to get us in after tampering with our doorknob and lock - he had to find a few things down in the garage to use to get us in though. Took all of 45 minutes :P Meanwhile my son and I sat there eating snacks while waiting to get in.

Yes we leave the keys in a place privy only to family members and special someones but before you can reach the main door, you have to get past either one of two gates with combination locks and our most trusted guard dog, Diabol. Cheers! Happy Posting :)

Yes, I do, but it's not my front door key. It's just a key that has no use, but that I like to hide under flower pots.

I have never kept a spare key outside of my home. I guess I am afraid that someone would be able to find it. I can't say that I remember a time when I wasn't able to get into my home. But if for some reason I don't have my keys then I am able to call a few people that I know who will be able to get me inside.

I have a ton of flowerpots tp pick and choose from, but my mum would kill me if she knew I hid any keys outside. She's super paranoid, but if we ever lose our keys we could always troop down to my cousin's and borrow a spare key. They live like 2 minutes away from us so I guess it's safer that way.

Definately have to say, i wouldn't dare keep a key anywhere near the frontdoor. Just can't trust people these days. Everyone in the family has one, so it shouldn't be that big of a problem. Hasn't yet in 7 years.

Our spare key is at our neighbour's house. Hopefully if someone forgets their key, someone is home at their house. It has worked out when the kids have gotten home from school only to find no one home and they have no key with them. We also have the neighbour's key and their son is always knocking on our door because he forgot his key. I would not leave one outside. On the other hand, the town I live in is not full of criminal activity. Any breaks-ins usually happen to homes that are out in the country where no one can see them if they were to attempt to get in. My mother lives in the big city. Break-ins and drive-by shootings are prevalent. However, my mother does have a spare key hidden outside because any of us kids could show up and not be able to get in without it. It is not hidden in a very obvious spot. I don't think any criminal looking around would find it. Funny though, I understand there is a spare key to the church rectory (the home where the priest lives) hidden somewhere outside. For the sake of the church I won't say where. Though I believe there is another door once inside that one that one would need a key for to get into the actual home. The first door only gets you into the basement and an office. But like I said, our town is not full of criminal activity. The most we get is some graffiti and break-ins are usually out of town.

The boy is almost 13 years old. We both have lived in this neighbourhood 10 years. He doesn't get embarrassed with us. I used to babysit him after school. I just don't like him to rely on us because we aren't always there when HE gets home from school.

never do i do such things because now a days the thieves are much intelligent than us they know the places where theses keys should be so they check everywhere and obviously they would check in the flowerpot if its nearby some where.

Nope. I think it's a pretty stupid idea because if I was a thief I would of thought looking for a key would be so much easier than breaking a window. Thankfully I'm not and I don't for the above reasons. ~Joey

I don't think so. Would you leave your wallet open on a table inside lets say a fast food joint and then go to the toilet? Maybe idiotic would suite best but I still think it's a stupid thing to do. (or to be politer not a smart thing to do) ~Joey

I used to board in school. I had a housemate who left dollar bills lying on his table, obvious to someone walking past his door which he left open. He kept boasting to me that nothing got stolen lol.

i m really paranoid about hiding my keys in some place like flower pot or under the mat! i don't live alone but even if i have to go outside when nobody's at home i'd rather give my house key to a neighbour(of course after locking doors of my important rooms;)) and ask them to give it to my family member/s when they return. and if i would ever live alone, i would just take along the key with me:)

Because so many people do this, it is getting to where it is almost simple to break into a house. Now they have "lock boxes" where a cleaning lady, etc enters a code, then pulls out a key from the box. I personally have 1 key, hubby has another. If I lose my key or he his, we can call each other to get in. I would never keep a spare key to my home anywhere near my house. That would totally defeat the purpose of locking the door !!

Might as well draw an arrow pointing to the key and add a note for the robber to please take only half since you helped show him the way. :P
