I used to think it was funny to pretend to be a shop or takeaway or brothel etc when I answered the phone. It would be funny with my friends but caller display ruined it. it stopped being funny anyway when it was my grandma or my boss on the phone!

If at residence phone, I would first tell my name, so that the caller will tell me straightaway what is required to be conveyed. At office, I announce the name of the firm.

Many people answer their phones with "So and So Residence", although my thought is.... no kidding, I called you.. I HOPE it IS your residence! LOL I personally will just stick with hello. Call me plain.

I have to tell you this is a silly discussion and the only thing I could come up with is Yoo. If not hello then say Yoo. Sound good to you?

Well many of my friends complain when I do this, but I hate the phone and it always seem to ring when I am trying to get something done, so I answer it with "What?", simple as that. I think that is what I would say if they walked into my house and bothered me, so why say something else since it's over the phone, LOL.

I always say Hello who's calling? But usually wait for whoever it is on the other side to talk first, so depending on who it is I get the answer for them. I usually say Who is calling? In a very polite and soft voice lol. I always get commended for my good telephone manner and my Fiance who is in the U.S says he really likes my voice..That is a bit of a boost for me and whoever it is, I like to keep my best manners, even if it is a sales person or someone more closely linked to me..I will never ever be rude to someone on the phone or impolite.

LOL! If I'm in a bad mood or think it's a sales call or something equally annoying I will answer .... "What do you want??!!". But usually it's just a "Heeeelllo!"

wWhere I live we have different customs. In my country we say our last name when we answer the phone. So I say my name when the phone rings. This way the caller knows to whom he is connected. It is considered impolite to say hello. This is still from the good old days when phone calls were very expensive. It takes way less time ( and way back when money) to find out who is talking to whom if one opens the conversation with the last name. Children answering the phone have to say their first and last name, adult owners of the line just say their last name. And if I am a guest at a house and answer the phone I say: at the Meyers´, for example. This is the way it is done correctly in my country.
