I was sitting in the living room of my mom’s house, when my sister-in-law came in the room. She was telling about an incident that took place at work between her and her boss and I swear I could barley make out what she was trying to say…lol…I would hear a word or two and then this “pop”! Not just a small “pop”, it seemed more like a fire cracker!I glanced over to her and noticed that she was chewing gum and the “popping” sound was coming from her. I sat there for fifteen minutes as the conversation went on feeling really irritated…..I was disappointed when I heard the laughter and the awhh’s, because I felt left out of the conversation. How about you, do you pop your gum as you chew it? Does it irritate you when others do it? Please share your thoughts:)

As a child both me and my brother used to love to pop gums. In fact, both of us would have a competition as to who can blow the largest bubble and make the loudest pop. Both our parents used to get really bugged by this. But, more they used to get bugged, the more we used to enjoy doing it :). But, like all things that are funny as kids, they suddenly seemed to be not so funny as we grew up. Now-a-days, I do not pop gums, in fact I don't eat gums at all these days. I prefer chocolates to gums these days. Cheers! Ram

Thank you so much Ram for taking the time to share your childhood with us:) I used to chew gum alot but since I have had my kids I just don't chew it at all. I get really irritated when my sister-in-law is around because she chews and pops her gum all day long! I am begining to think that's the whole reason behind it, just to irritate me...lol:)

I would suggest you one way to cure it. Next time when she has an interesting topic to discuss with you, pop in a chewing gum and every now and then let out a loud pop and clap everytime it is loud. The more you do it the more she would get irritated and the more she gets irritated, you would have delivered your message :) Cheers and all the best!! Ram

Same with me, I no longer am fond of gums at all. I'd rather brush my teeth if I need to rather than chew gum.

no, I don't. most educated people do not do this boorish habit I remember going to a movie with my mother and if some kids (girls) was pop ing their gum she would scream at them. "stop pop ing your gum!" O was I embarassed! but she was right. and usually these kids would stop as my mother could be very intimidating. it worked for me. i don't chew gum. Just let her be a good example of what not to do!

When I'm with my son we always pop and chew our gum. We actually play games to see who can blow the biggest bubble and see who can pop each others bubbles LOL we only do it around ourselves though and not around others as you right it can be irritating to others and to me too when I hear others doing the same thing.

I don't think you are over reacting at all. I think its rude to do that in front of others while your conversing. I have noticed though lately with teenagers at the mall and such, a lot of them do that, chew, pop their gum and then keep on talking. I wonder if it is a teenage cool thing to do LOL

Thank you so much for responding:) My mom actually thinks that I am over reacting, by being irriteted by my sister-in-laws gum popping but I really can't stand it! I don't see why she has to do it while in a conversation with others, she probably thinks that its cool or something!

In our house, nobody has the habit of chewing gums, as yet. Some of my basketball friends does, just like Michael J or Scottie P. But poppong them, nahh. They dont pop gums. They just chew it. There are times I can see chewing gums being popped at but these are mainly being done by children. I never experienced seeing an adult popping gums more so popping gums while talking to me. liyan97, my friend, maybe it has become some sort of a fad among your sister-in-law circle or office mates about this popping gum thing? If it has, then it would indeed be an irritating fad

LOL..Thank you for your response:) Someone mentioned in an earlier post that she has seen many teenagers doing the same thing, so my guess is it probably a fad...Although my sister-in-law is an adult, she does seem to act imature at times...example: "popping gum while talking!" lol....

I do pop my gumm when i chew but not when i am talking, i am not sure what i really do with the gum while i am talking but i dont pop it. I dont pop it too often either because i have this embedded image of my mother yelling at me and my sister and making us spit our gum out everytime she woudl hear a pop. I think we might of gotton a warning then if we opopped it a second time that was it it was gone. It irritated my mom to no end to hear a popping gum. still does to this day and it is automatic then if she is around then you just dont do it. LOL and now that she has grandchildren my sister and i sit back and laugh at it when she yells at them the same way she yelled at us LOL

I pop my gum a lot, but I also take in consideration other people. Like I won't pop it in class or on the bus you know (I'm in college won't get in trouble for chewing gum in class teehee)

When I chew gum,it's Juicy fruit usually and it is not bubble gum.I do not ppop it.It doesn't normally bother me except when I can't understand what they are saying.I will and have said," Stop it,I can't understand you." If they want to tell me something and expect me to hear it then make it so I can understand them.Iam deaf in one ear too.

I do not chew gum in public. I think it is rude to try and talk to someone while they are chewing gum. My biggest pet peeve...are those that try to sing in the choir at church and are smacking gum. How can you sing or talk either one with gum in your mouth?

I used to be a gum popper. But, now I have so many fillings in my teeth, that I don't chew gum very much. I'm afraid I'll put out the fillings.

I do occasionally but only when I am annnoyed, my daughter has just started tryig to do it, and although the popping is annoying thes most annoying part is finding bits of it stuck all over my house. lol
