When your children play do they mimic what they see?

I have heard conflicting reports on this, saying that children make up their own games and play as they feel. I do know however, that they will imitate what they see in real life too! My little boy has recently begun to "play" smoke a ciggarrette and it just infuriates me, especially since his Daddy died of lung cancer almost 2 years ago. Does your child mimic what he sees?

I think that children do mimic a lot of what the see in life. It would be hard for them not to in some ways. You learn about life by watching what is happening around you. My daughter mimics me in several different ways. Several people have told me that she is just a small version of me. If my daughter mimics something that I have done that I don't like I explain to her that it was something that was bad and that mommy shouldn't have done it either. How did you handle the situation with your son?

I didn't act shocked...though I was! I just calmly said, Kurt...you know, a long time ago people didn't know that smoking was really bad for you and lots of people did it to look grown-up. Now, more and more people want to stop because not only can it kill you, it is really expensive and people don't want to be around the second hand smoke. I haven't seen him do it since.

Yes my children mimic so much of what they see that they are constantly amazing me with what they know just from watching others . I didn't notice this so much with my older children as I do with my younger children now but see it all the time and it really shows how a child picks up so much from us that we may not even realize .

That is aweful! I am sorry to hear about your sons daddy. That would make me very upset to see also. My kids do alot of making up things on their own, but they also will say and do things that they have heard around here. I also run a daycare, and a while back when Bucky Phillips was running from the police and he was on the news ect...The day the police caught him, the helicopters were going over my house circling looking for him. We were outside playing until someone called me and said that Bucky was in our area. I immediately took the kids in the house and turned on the radio for me and the tv for them. Bucky was caught not to far from my house. A few days later we were outside and one of the little girls said, 'let's play Bucky Phillips'. It made me a bit upset that they wanted to play this bad man! I immediately turned it around and got them into another game, but since then, many times they will say let's play bucky.

Yes children always do that at such a young age. My daughter used to do the same thing. She would imitate me driving on her little steering wheel thing and yell at other people and she did try the smoking like mommy thing which I put a stop to that very quickly. She hates that I smoke and she wants me to quit. But yes most kids do mimic what others do in daily life. They like to play house and mimic their parents attitudes and personalities and what they say that stands out in their minds, so I had to be careful what I said around her because she would mimic me when she was playing dolls or house with her little friend.

My daughters, who are 19-month old and soon-to-be 4-year old, mimic their 5-year old brother. However, my older daughter also makes up stories and songs. My eldest son invents stories and games but he still imitates his younger sisters and older people like me, his daddy and his grandparents. Children do what we do most of the time. Older people should really be careful and be mindful of their actions.

My children make up their owngames usually but they do also sometimes mimic what they see. My 2 year old hasn't started mimicking like that yet but my 7 year old pretends to smoke. I think that kind of thing is something most kids do. All I say to my child is that he must know actual smoking is very bad. I think as long as children know the difference between reality and fantasy, it shouldn't cause too much of a problem. It's only when they play pretend and parents don't explain dangers of reality that bad things tend to happen. I mean, how many boys (and girls) have played cowboys and indians? Not many of them grow up to go around shooting people.

My son mimics some of what he sees, but mostly he makes things up. He has a big imagination. The only thing that bothers me is copying the t.v. commercials. I can't stand commercials as it is, and he will go around repeating those.

Well, for me, sad to say that they do not mimic my husband or myself. They would rather mimic Mr Bean, Powwer rangers, ultraman, spiderman, etc. It bugs me to see they play roughly with each other especially when they are only 6 and 3 years of age. It is tough to see our boys mimicking the things that angers us especially so when it is not the example we want them to follow. However, it will take a gigantic effort to reason with them and also it doesn't take 1 night for them to understand and stop doing it. As parents, we should always try and never give up. Kids are for us to mould because they are young. They need direction and pointers. Try role playing on the harms of smoking. They might just understand with one play. - Lyn

My daughter doesn't yet coz she's not old enough but we did have our nieces over for the night & my oldest niece (who is 4) has picked up the really 'Trampy/Smutty' dance moves that all the current pop stars do in their video clips & such. It's really upsetting to see a 4 year old girl running around in her knickers sticking out her butt & thrusting at things. She also dances on your leg very 'sexily' like they do in those clips so i guess it does show how much kids pick up off of TV!

I think kids are more intuituve than we think they are. Thery are highly aware of their sourroundings and are very impressionable at a young age. I remember when I was small, I always pretended to be a teacher because i looked up to my teachers as role models. Your son must have picked up the "smoking" action from somewhere and he must see this as a positive thing. Perhaps you should try explaining to him why smoking is bad.

Yes yes yes Children LOVE to imitate what they see around them, especially those who are older than them so then they can become "adults". Here is an advice, i think you should get the message across at an early age, to tell your child that smoking is bad and stop him from doing that imitation! and when he grows to be more mature, he will subconsciously know that it is bad to smoke =D Just like eating, children love to pretend they are adults and eat what they eat, some of them refuse to eat baby food when they see that what the adult eats looks more yummy. When i was a baby i refused to drink milk and only ate what the adults ate, my dad is also a smoker but i have no intension to smoke since my mother told me at a young age that smoking kills and is bad =D hope this helps

It is so fascinating to see babies mimic the way their mom's talk. Even in the midst of watching their favorite cartoon programs. They just simply wanted to learn more. The sad thing, some old age group did stop exploring their world. Perhaps they are so contented of what they have.
