Well, my big move from Pennsylvania to Oregon is just weeks away and I am getting increasingly nervous and antsy. I've got so many questions left unanswered and plans left to make. How is my toddler going to react to her first plane ride? What items should I pack up and take with me on the plane and what should get left behind? Should we hire a moving company to drive our stuff out there or should we have only those things we can't replace shipped to us? How in the world am I gonna pay for all of this? I haven't packed a thing. I look around and don't even know where to start. Tomorrow I give my two weeks notice at work, which has made this whole move so much more real. Well wishes, advice, anecdotes on moving, suggestions for moving/shipping services....all are welcome and very much appreciated!

wow that's a really major life changing move, even though it's still within the same country. Friends of mine who have done similar moves hired a U-Haul and just drove. But that presumes the luxury of time. And I think the cheapest way is to ship. I'm assuming you have to pack for three. when my family of three moved within 5km of my previous home, the packing was still a nightmare. All i can say is force yourself to get organised, get lots of boxes, and help from all your friends and family (buy them a simple dinner that weekend after the packing party) and it'll be easier than if you did it all by yourself!

Fortunately, I only really have to pack for two. My boyfriend packed most of his things in his car when he drove their in May. He left behind a few of the bulkier items that I will have to pack up myself. I've decided to leave alot of my belongings here in PA because most of them can be used by my brother and other family members. But, I still have quite a few things that I want to bring with me. Like you suggested, I'm definitely going to have to get organized in order to pack correctly. As for renting a U-haul, well, U-hauls are very expensive and we simply cannot afford it.

moving - Moving boxes and people to help
We made a big move like that almost a year ago and I can say that it was very difficult thinking about all the things you mentioned, we checked into all the different ways to move and found moving companys are very expensive and that it was less expensive for us to get a u-haul and move it ourselves and tow our car. have you thought about driving instead of flying because right now with that your looking at a double expense with flying and having to get your belongings shipped there. Its very hard to decide what to take and what to leave, we were lucky enough to be able to leave a few things behind with family so when we returned to visit we could pick the up, as much as we could get in the jeep. check with the airlines about what you can take on the plane as they have gotten very strick on things. Good luck with your move and i wish you all the best with everything.

We have put thought into driving, but we've come to the conclusion that driving is not an option. Flying is not really an added expense because it will just be my daughter and I (my boyfriend Brian is already living in OR) and we would have to pay for gas to drive there anyway. You're right, though, moving companies are VERY expensive, especially when you're moving across the country and not just a town over or something. We're not taking most of our replaceable belongings like beds and dressers, etc. but we do have a couple of bulky items that we need to take. I will definitely check to see what I can and cannot take on the plane. Thanks for your suggestions and the well wishes!

Moving can be very very stressful, I quite like the packing up when getting ready to move, I especially love packing up the boxes and labelling them but it is the actual moving day that is a nightmare I think, but in all moving is a very exciting thing, a new start a new road to travel, goodluck with your move I hope it all works out well for you.

Thank you very much. I'm gonna follow your lead and try to have fun with the packing process. It might help keep my stress level down lol. I'll cross the moving day bridge when it gets here and pray everything works out well.

Well, you just hang in there that is all you can do and try to relax. It will be very stressful until you unpack. Just don't try to do everything all at once, try to take your time and not rush things because your body will thank you later.

That's some good advice. My body is already starting to ache from all the stress I've put on it trying to gear up for this move. I'll try to remember to take it easy and do things in increments. Thanks!
