I am attempting to reinstall Windows XP home but find, after many attempts, that the Presario R3000 switches itself off as soon as the opperating system begins to load! This is not only happens with 'Windows' but with any opperating system I attempt to load. I have even gone to the extent of clearing the hard drive with 'Kill Disk' but all to no avail. Any surgestions would be appreciated.

Why don't you do a "System Restore"???
It's already on your computer on XP...
Look for it under start-all programs-accessories-system tools-system restore...
Just pick a previous date that your computer was working perfectly and set that as your starting spot to use in the future and restore your computer like that...
It takes a little while to do, so don't be impatient...

I just want to add that I have never seen such worthless info provided by some people in my life as those on this thread that answer you and offer no help...
Why bother answering if you are of no help???

Here it is 2011 and I stumble upon this discussion, I was appalled by the number of useless responses as the discussion starter was asking a very valid query. I am so amazed with the number after your comment that continued to ridicule the discussion starter.
I can only surmise that members felt compelled in being funny as opposed to being help. Poor taste in joke really as none were actually to chuckle for. Had I been a member back five years ago I would not have tolerated this either. You have applied the best response in my opinion as it is the correct route to have gone. Unfortunately it appears that after posting this discussion the member left, perhaps the ridicule was a wee bit too much.
Quite unfortunate that no one merited your great response. So never too late and i wil confirm that yours absolutely was.

You may need to FORMAT your hard disk to make a CLEAN installation of Windows XP. By re-installing XP on top of the previous one would only cause you problems. When you have inserted the installation CD of Windows XP you will go to the installation Blue screen right. Choose FORMAT hard drive. I bet that this is the best solution to your problem.

There may be many reasons for this problem. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. Some RAM/hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful
