i just started working as an education consultant at an IT training provider and one of the 'must do' thing is to do cold calling (by phone) to individuals to gauge their interest level in going for certifications with us. I've always hated telemarketing and i'm finding that it's really a huge challenge for me daily. Anyone out there sharing the same predicament? care to share some tips?

When I had my avon business a few yrs back, I hated follow ups. It was like I was intruding on their personal space. I write better than I do speaking in public. I've been known to sit by myself, and have no one talk to me at all! And I'm a nice person! I don't like rejection, so I feel for ya!

Thank you! exactly what i felt. i don't mind following up through emails though but that ran the risk that there won't be any reply....sigh...

sometimes it's a no win situation with people. I don't like salespeople to keep constantly calling me. Recently we had a couple of deaths in my family, and I had two salespeople calling me. NOw had they left me alone, I probably would have listened. It just depends with me. Also we don't have the do not call on our phone, so if people can't tell me how they got our phone number, I usually won't talk with them.

LOL, i know what you mean! I'm praying every single day for that 'phase' to pass, where i'm firm with my own customer base and do not need to cold call anymore...sigh...guess i will have to hang in there, then! Thanks for your encouragement and sharing!

Hi eunice,
How are you? hope you are doing great with your new job. It'd nice to see you come abck and post on mylot again. I myself don't like telemarketing as i find it very annoying and it surely seems challenging job to do esp. if one doesn't like it as one has to deal with all sorts of people in professional manner. I have not done it myself and i don't think i capable of it either. LOL. I wish you all thebest with your new job. Have a nice day.:)

LOL. thanks for the welcome...i can assure you that it's not really a very smooth and pleasant time. There are some people who talk to me as if i'm such a pest...though i've tried to cut my call short and breezy...sigh!!! nice to see you again!!! :D

I use to do "cold calling" and at first found it a challenge..but then I changed the way I looked at this job.
I refocused..
I told myself what I was doing was valuable..The information I gather will help many other people.
If people are rude they are not applying their rudeness to me..they simply are caught at an inopportune time.
I know if I focused on it as merely calling number after number..I would lose interest..
I, look at each number I dial as an opportunity..Even if someone is rude..I say thank you so much for your time.
This allows me to spread a little kindness even to the unkind person..
Refocus..and realize your job is valuable and the info you gather will in the end help a huge number of people;)+

I hate cold callings. They are just a pain in the behind. I can't stand them at all. I did that for a job once and I quit the next week because I just couldn't stand the stress whatsoever.

I guess if you talk politely and all chances are you would get a polite reply.. Do straight to the point, many people do not like you hitting around the bush.
I dare say there will be days where you get rude or harsh response. This is only because you caught them on their bad day. Example, mothers in the mid of changing their baby's diaper, or cooking in the kitchen and all.
Yes, it is a huge challenge. Just keep reminding yourself that at the end of the day, the worst thing that can happen to you is stress. It would not be the end of the world for you. So, meet up with your friends and party away them stress ;)

Thanks! I knew that I can always rely on my myLot friends to keep me strong and uplifted. I do get straight to the point, much to the annoyance of my manager, he 'trained' me to beat around the bush to get more information, as if the other person have all day to chat with me. But Thanks for your response! Helps a lot!
