My cat is 3 years old and we have never given her milk. My son asked me why we don't. I don't know. Should you give your cat milk? You see it on tv all the time cats drinking milk. I need a lot of information. Ok all you cat lovers, help me out ...please.

don't ever give a cat regular milk... it gives them diarrhea and that's not a good thing... BUT... i have found a wonderful replacement! get some of the lactose intolerant milk - it's right there with the regular milk, only costs a few cents more, and they LOVE IT! i get the whole lactose intolerant milk.. they don't seem to like the 2 percent variety! haha! i have quite a few cats at any given time because i do rescue and foster work... and they know when mom gets home from work, they get their milk. i would try about a quarter cup and see what your kitty thinks of it... as with any treat, you don't want to overdo it! :-D

Thanks for your help. I think this weekend I will look for the lactose intolerant milk. I'm always looking for healthy type of treats for my cat...not that she is spoiled.

I wouldn't give kitty a lot of milk. It tends to give them diarrhea, and believe me it's not pretty! I would stick with dry food, and maybe mix in a can of wet food for a treat. I always give my cats Friskies dry food.....the one in the purple bag that has the milk flavored nuggets in it. They love it. My cat Missy will pick out the nuggets first and then eat the rest. Any info you need, let me know.....after all, I AM the Katlady you know. LOL

Yes and no. Cats do use their tails to help with balance when they are sitting. But then there are the cats with no tails, and they do just fine. So just go ahead and kick the person that told you that with only one foot instead of both, ok? LOL

Ok Katlady, I will be asking you all kinds of quetions. I feed my cat meow mix...that's what they started her on when she was a kitten. I do have a question....someone told me that cat's have long tails to help with their balance. Is this true, or were they pulling my leg?

NO! When I was a kid our cats used to get cows milk and it eventually made one of them very sick..REason being, many cats are lactose intolerant and giving them cow's milk regularly can cause diareah and other gastric problems...Its ok to give it to them OCCASIONALLY but not on a regular basis AND NEVER EVER give cow's milk to a kitten in place of the mothers milk... Nowdays mind you, you can buy "cats milk" at pet stores which is especially designed/treated for a cats digestive system....

Thanks for your advice. Before I started this discussion, I had no idea that milk was that bad for cats. I have learned alot from this site. I think I will just stick with water.

Oh I love the idea of that...you can be a trend setter...be the first to have a water fountain in your kitchen!! Just make sure it's pure water, not tap water!! am really liking this idea! Or maybe a little fountain like those chocolate fondue fountains, only water for your cat! Or better yet, make it especially for cats to sit on the floor....you could always add food color to the water and make it look really pretty...LOL...ok I took this to far!!

Sorry, but that makes me laugh, and I needed a good laugh. Well you know, if you ever gave her water in a bowl, she wouldn't have to work so hard just to get a drink of water...LOL...

I have given my cats milk as a treat. However my MIL said never to give milk to a cat. She says that they are lactose intolerant. I don't know if this is true or not, but my cats never had any problems from it.

Well, I wonder who has who trained. Sounds like your cat has you trained to give him milk when he meows...LOL. I think it's great to spoil your pets. What a lucky cat.

That he has me well trained is a fact LOL He wakes me up in the morning with his cold nose and meowing so that he gets his can kitty food. He is 10 yrs old and I have had him since he was a kitten.

I prefer not to give my cats milk simply because they spill it instead of drink it. One of my cats won't come near the food and water bowls if there is milk by it. He really hates dairy foods.

I wonder if mine would snub her nose at it now since she is three and never had milk. She would probably get mad at me and spill it. Not that my cat is spoiled....

I have a cat who is 5 yrs old now and we have always given him milk. He was a very small kitten when we got him home. So he really loved milk then but now he doesn't like it that much. But when we give him milk once in a while and he has it. I don't know if it is good for cats or no but cats are always associated with milk so it must be good.

I know I had just thought of that, and I thought maybe my cat is missing out on something that's good for her.

Cats can't digest lactose which is in regular milk. So you either have to buy cat's milk (that is on the shelve without the lactose) or buy the lactose-free human milk. Don't even give them regular milk because it's not good for them. Have a nice day. Pablo

I don't give my cats milk. It makes them sick. I tried it when my cat was small and she kept throwing it up. So, now, it's only water that I give them.

That's what I am afraid of happening, and I really don't want to have to clean that up!

Some of my cats enjoy milk, and other dairy products, while others don't care for any kind of "people food". If you do choose to try to give your cat milk, then only give her a small amount. I'm pretty sure that it's too rich for their stomachs.
