Does it hurt to get a tattoo?

I grew up before tattoos became popular, so I never really thought about getting one. But even if I were younger, I'm so terrified of pain that I don't think I would want to do it. Am I wrong about this? Does it hurt less than I imagine?

It depends a lot on where on the body you choose to get a tattoo. I have tattoos on my upper arms, these really did not hurt very much. I would equate it to something similar to a bee sting. After a while, it tends to get a bit numb anyway. Once the tattoo is finished, any pain tends to diminish pretty quickly and should not hurt during the healing period(but it will ITCH!).
Now, I've also got one on my leg, near to my ankle. This was so painful I actually passed out. I was shocked both that it hurt so much and that it made me pass out. Once I was up and running again they were able to finish it up without incident(but it still hurt). Certain parts of the body are just more sensitive, places where the skin is thinner or where bones are prominent. Fleshy areas tend to hurt less.
If you actually decide to get one, make sure it is something you really really really want, because unless you can afford to have it lasered off, it is forever. ;)

The two i got didn't hurt. The first one is on my lower back and the second one is on my calf. It felt mor elike cat scratches, and then it just started to vibrate my skin.

Some parts can hurt really bad and some don't hurt at all. I've actually had one that half hurt and half didn't. It's a good kind of pain and it doesn't last forever! Just the beautiful artwork!
