Is gardening actually saving you money on your bills?

So I am happily munching my home grown fruit of the season. It is nice and tasty and fresh and full of vitamins. I wonder, am I saving money on my monthly bills? I have to buy plants and fertilizer and pay for the cost of water. Sure, fruit is expensive in the store, especially the cherries.
But it costs money to get a crop.
If I would figure in the cost of my work and the ground is very expensive to buy where I live, then I am probably at a loss.
Well who cares, gardening is fun and the fruit is delicious.....

I do not have vegetable garden, but It's one of the things I would like to do some day. Even if it does not save you any money you know your fruits and vegetables are free of pesticide. I prefer to know my fruits are natural without chemicals.

I feel I save a lot of cash on my food bills by growing my own fruits and vegetables even though with the cold winters I only have homegrown for about 5 maybe 6 months out of the year. The thing is I don't buy a lot of plants, I buy seeds or get plants from friends and family. So that cost is very minimal. Granted the apple trees were costly but they are producing many apples and after this years harvest I should be even on that exspense. I dion't use fertilizer or special soil as what I have seems to be very well for everything I've planted. So heres a lit iof what I have every summer and spring that I don't or won't need to buy most the year....
Apples (2 types) Grapes (1 vine for now), Strawberries, rasberries, green beans, corn, green peppers, gypsy peppers, zuchinni, tomatoes (6 different types), cucumbers, and I think that's it. Too many to try and recall. So all in all I save a LOT of cash on gardening. The water bill isn't bad as I use muclh around the plnats which absorbs and holds moisture in the ground requiring less watering actually.
HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I agree that the end results are what count, I have an orange tree that I have grafted lemon and grapefruit branches on to. One tree, three fruits, a lot of people that happen to walk by and see it ask me how I did it. Also, I save seeds from a lot of my plants and plant them the next year, why buy seeds if you don't need them?

Is anyone familiar with growing medium sized veggies in containers? I just started this project using inverted 1.5 liter pet bottles. There is not much room in our house so I decided to put it in hanging containers. the tomatoes and lettuce are growing but seems slow to me. By the way I am using vermicompost I think I used to little about 2 spoonsful per container, think its enough?

I was thinking about this as well. Last year was our first attempt at a veg garden and it was wonderful. We doubled it this year. I think the cost could be close however cause mine is local organic I know it is a healthy choice. I live in small town Canada where there isn't local organic food. Either it is local filled with who knows what or it is organic from some other country. My stuff is fresh and healthy so it just feels good. Also I agree gardening is fun!

I really believe that we do save on our grocery bill. The price of produce is rising almost daily at our local groceries. (I think some of this is due to the gas prices) We grow red/yellow/green peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, zuchinni, and jalepeno peppers. Extras are given to friends/neighbors. We don't seem to need fertilizers, our garden grows quite nicely without it. Even if we don't save money, I know the quality of what is going into my body. The food is organic and I love that!

For many people gardening probably doesn't save them any money because it can be expensive to maintain a garden. As you said, there is a lot involved in gardening when you figure in all of your expenses. When you reap the rewards though, it is generally worth it.

I think it's great when people grow their own crops to supplement their groceries, but the thing i find myself is that I always end up with too much, e.g if I bought lettuce seeds then I'd end up with a bumper crop but then they don't retain the shelf life, and in the end these items probably cost more on a per case basis than something that is intensively farmed. Overall though I think the benefit outweighs any doubts.

harvesting your own crop is better than buying one in the market. besides, you'll get the fresh ones. If it will cost you to do the gardening, well, the joy and fun of doing it is already a great reward!

There is nothing like picking corn fresh from the garden and shucking and eating it right in the garden. If you try to eat corn raw from the store it will taste like cardboard. Most vegetables and fruits will taste a lot better when they are fresh and not having been stored and shipped from along distance. You will also cut down on your carbon footprint because you will not have to use gas or diesel to ship from another country. There will be other benefits also from eating fruits and vegetables from your own garden.

hi inky..yeah gardening is saving my money.but i dont purchase more fertislisers and we use natrual fertiliser for greater extent.it is like wastage vegetables, old leaves .......it is good for the plants.and we do grow vegetable plants so we need not buy vegetables in the market. have coconut trees, mango, guava, tamarind, sapota trees. So we dont buy and some times if we get good crop we will sell them.So i can say we are earning money from them.We have appointed one man to look after our garden but some times i too do gardening but like to have a walk in our garden daily usually in the mornings and evenings to feel the good breeze and for health breath.

I find that it doesn't really unless you bulk gardening if that makes sense. You spend so much time and effort to look after it and not to mention the water costs too, that it will only make a difference if you plant and grow lots of stuff at the same time. But other than that, it must be great to eat your own home-grown fruits.

My family have a garden 2 years ago. At that time, my mother love to plant some vegetables in there. Everyday she water the vegetables in the garden and feel happy. My mom told me that planting vegetables by herself could save money. The cost of the water, seeds and fertilizers are cheaper than the vegetables which sold in the shop. Also my mom told me she was health because planting the vegetables is a very perfect exercise.

we also grow a vegetable gartden in our backyard and not only do i get to save on my bills, i'm also assured that we don't have harmful pesticides or harmful substances sprayed on the veggies that i harvest and put on the table. and yes, it's fun and i love watching them grow and flourish.
