Hi everyone,
I have decided that I want to get into shape and want some advice. I have tried various exercise videos or fads i.e dancercise, boxercise etc but never seem to stick to anything for long. What I want some advice on is:-
a)the best exercise to do to get fit, I'm not talking about losing weight but getting in shape and being healthy and
b)what you think the most fun/interesting exercise regime is that will keep me committed and interested.
What have been your experiences on the types of exercise to avoid and what has worked for you?

I would say go with kickboxing. Kickboxing gives you a great cardio workout but also helps to tone muscles. I haven't worked out in a while but when I was big into working out I would always watch kickboxing videos or attend kickboxing classes. You might have to experiment with different kinds of workouts to see which is best for you and keeps you coming back for more. Everyone has different interests when it comes to working out. Kickboxing is just what did it for me and kept me into working out.

Its hard to stick to a exericse program that you dont like. The treadmill is great you put it right in front of tv and walk or run. Going to the gym can be a great benefit you meet people and then you can work out together which will be fun. Good luck!

The problem for me is getting motivated to go to the gym. I think something at home might be better for me and less time consuming. I tried the gym a few times and didn't enjoy it, but know people who love it and couldn't live without going every day so maybe if I started again I would get the bug. Thanks for the advice

Running is the best lol. Just run. Choose some nice place to run at and you might like it.
If not, try skipping. This is very good too.

I've been doing Yoga for many years and its changed my life! I'm 73 and still working. So healthy, I can hardly stand it, and haven't had a medical checkup for 35 years. You can Join a Yoga Club, or check your TV programming, to find yoga classes. I use audio tapes and also VCR tapes that I got off the TV. I like doing yoga at home, every morning as soon as I get up. My wife enjoys doing Yoga too. WE do Yoga for 45 minutes each morning. Its wonderful for you general Health, and it keeps your muscles stretched and strong. What a Way to Start your Day!

Wow, you've really caught my attention. My sister did it for a few months a few years ago and looked fabulous. I don't know why she gave it up. I have to admit that the idea of yoga is one form of exercise that appeals to me the most. I'm going to take it up and give it a try. Thanks.

If you talking about a healthy heart, I would suggest pulling out the ipod and dancing or light jogging. It doesn't have to be often, just 3 times a week for 15+minutes and you will feel much better. If not hit the gym (with a friend perhaps) that way you both stay motivated and it becomes more of a social thing

Exercising can be a tedious task, you really need to find somethign that you enjoy doing and make it into an exercise in itself. Personally i find that swimming is great, you can really let yourself go in the waters and you cna do fun things while you are at it.
I used to play a game called Underwater hockey, while i played that game i was at my fittest, huge leg muscles, great stomach muscles, i could even swim 75 meters underwater without any swimming aids (aside goggles) before i would need to come up for air.
Things you can do in the water are buy toys, they have a wide array of devices to play with in the water, you can get a friend to drop them randomly in the water and have a stop watch to see how long it takes y ou to collect each item, be it keys, coins etc.
Also invest in an exercise bike, and leave it in the lounge infront of the tele, put on some music, or a good dvd or watch free to air, sit on the bike and pedal while you watch/listen.
Also invest in an ipod, you will walk for miles listening to music, pick your all time favorites and take a trip around the block. I've sheded a few kilos since i have done this ( i used to be 120KG (thanks to an accident which took 2 years to recover from), i am now 85kg)
these are just a few thoughts. hope this helps.

For time to time I have followed the programs from the videos by Tony Little - especially the stretching has helped me to get rid of many shoulder problems and back problems.
I also follow the recommendation by www.gnld.com and take the food supplements to keep my cells healthy. I am soon 62 and have no pharmacy medication at all.
The oils in the capsules I take are Omega3 from Salmon, cold pressed from clean waters and vegetable, cold pressed oils with the right lipids and sterols that keep the cell membranes soft so that the nutrition can get in and the waist get out.
To keep my muscles in a good shape I take GR2 control from the same company, with all 22 proteins we need and together with their sugar control program I can keep a better energy level during the day.
If we feed our muscles right, we donĀ“t need so much exercise, they will grow anyway, and the stretching is easy - you can even do it in bed before getting up in the morning.

Walking is my favorite exercise. There are a couple of parks near my house that have nice walking trails and I really enjoy those. Walking will help you lose weight and built stamina and it is a great way to relieve stress also. I enjoy the time alone just to clear my head.

i think running or jogging is most efficient exercise and i recommend it. i used to jog every morning and it makes me healthy all the time, but today i seldom run because i'm busy at work. otherwise i would keep the habit. running makes every part of your body muscle in activity and it is most suitable way for you to exercise.

Best way to keep fit is to do lot of walking. But before that I will tell you something very important. Inhaling fresh air deep into the lungs, early in the morning is very very important. Our body needs lot of oxygen. I have read that 99% cause of all kinds of sickness and depression lies in lack of enough oxygen in our cells. We all cannot do yoga, but at least we can breath air. So you see breathing oxygen and lot of walking regularly, sounds most eaisest and effective thing which suits to any age. and if we all will do it seriously, I think we will always remain fit.

Hi I recently started training again, My personal trainer say the best exersice you can do is using a rowing machine, all exersises target specific muscles or muscel groups but a decent rowing machine uses over 90 different muscles I do bike for 30 min, then cross trainer 30 min then rowing machine for 45 min and weights for 45 min,
I dont recommend you do what I do and to the extent I do I am an ex Nothern Kick Boxing Champion 1999 - 2000 - 2001 and am some what use to exersise and training

Since you seem to get easily bored with every activity you've done so far, then it's best that you try a new activity or workout each week. Do something that keeps you interested, such as belly dancing or roller blading. Even a simple activity, such as walking upstairs or downstairs, can turn out to be a good workout. You just have to do what fits you best.
