Is it true that premature babies will always be smaller in size? My youngest baby is premature (29 weeks) Now he is about 18 months. He seems kinda small althought he is very active.

Most premature babies will be smaller. I was premature and I will always be smaller and underdeveloped physically and mentally. I've learned the trait of actually pointing out premature people. They look small almost mousey looking, very small build.

I don't think thats true at all. Premature babies aren't as developed as babies the same age born full term which is why doctors use a corected age when judging development. Most doctors will tell you that prem babies will have usually caught up by the time they start school. As for them being small I don't know if you've noticed but some people are small and it doesn't mean that they were premature.

Hi my daughter was born at 32 weeks, she's 20 this year and well she's the same size if not taller than her friends who are the same age. It doesn't even depend on what size you are as she's taller than me. I'm 5'2 and she's 5'3. Back in the 80's when I gave birth I was told she only had 25% chance of surviving as she had a heart murmer. These days they say most prem babies have heart murmers. He will be as big as he'll be no matter when he was born.

I am not sure about size, all i know is that with time they will grow into normal persons-with sizes that are genetically defined, but all am very sure about is that they are hyperactive, very active indeed!

no, my cousin's son and my son were born a month a part, my son was overdue by 2 weeks and her son was early born at 28 weeks, now they're both 7 almost 8 and her son is bigger than mine, well taller, my son is wider. so, no it's not true, as babies yeah, her son didn't grow as fast as mine, but now they're both growing at normal rates, but maybe if he wasn't preemie i don't know if he would've been bigger, but he's pretty big now! good luck with ur son, i'm sure u think it's a blessing he survived!

It is not true that premature babies will always be small in size. I am not a premature baby but I am small as a child. On the other hand, my cousin who is premature grow to be so big

My daughter was born at 28 weeks gestation at 2 lbs 1 1/2 ozs. She's 11 months old now and she is already 22 lbs. I know 2 babies that were born on time 2 months earlier than my daughter and she's bigger than what they are already. So I would have to disagree with all premature babies being smaller. I think it depends on how the parents are. If the parents have a high metabolism and don't gain weight easily then the child will more than likely be small like his/her parents or vise versa. Good luck with your son.

I don't think that is always true. My nephew was born premature and he only weighed like 1.5 lbs when he was born. He barely made it. But now he is a hyperactive 3 year old and his is normal sized for his age.

I'm a premature baby, 6 of us are premature but I'm the smallest because I was born 6 1/2 mos weighing only 3.2lbs. My dad always joke around saying I can fit inside a shoe box. Until this day, I am smaller than my younger brothers and sisters. Sometimes it's a disadvantage, it can also be an advantage at the same time. They mistake my younger siblings to be much older than me, and they get angry. As long as your baby is healthy that is important.

Premature babies generally catch up with their peers mentally and physically within a year - genetics will play a far greater role. My son was also premature, but within a year he was at the extreme edge for height. (Both my husband and I are the short ones in our family and we're both nearly 6 ft). He's grown faster and taller than his full term sister, it's just how the genetic dice rolled. As long as your child is healthy and is following a fairly normal height/weight curve, enjoy him and don't worry!

No, it's not true. Premature babies also have the chance to grow big and tall depending on the dominant genes he has inherited from his parents. There are also other factors to affect the growth of premature babies, it includes the food he eats and the environment. Don't worry, your baby has a chance to grow big and tall too, just give him some time.

My daughter was born at 26 weeks and weighed just 900grams. But at five years old she doesn't seem much smaller than other kids the same age. She has very long limbs and if she follows her full term brothers will be very tall. I think a lot has to do with genetics. Take care of your little one.

My sister was 6 weeks early and 3 pounds when she was born. She is now 33 and very big person. My youngest son was 10 days late 9 pounds at birth and he is the size of an average 4 year old yet he is 6. He is the smallest and most underdeveloped child in his class. Childern grow at their own rate and I think premature babies can catch up. Even if they don't as long as they are happy and healthy it doesn't really matter.
