In 1960's and 1970's, this kind of status used to stay for couple of years or even a decade. Nowadays, within weeks or months, it changes either because there could be new found richest man or someone overtakes. Anyhow thanks for the information, I wasn't aware of this.

Hi derek - there is a lot of money in Mexico and a huge disparity between rich and poor. I think the perception of Mexico as a "poor" country is to do with all the illegals flooding into the US but the peso was actually doing very well for a time. It is very possible to live well and be rich in a perceived "poor" country. The opposite is true of course too - the US is a "rich" country and yet there are so many poor and homeless people there too.

Thank you. It is interesting to learn so much about other countries. When I see scenes of Mexico on the TV over here it is usually linked to the Mexicans trying to sneak across the borders in the U.S in search of a better life. I was going to go to Mexico many years ago, but it never came off. I wanted to go visit the pyramids and the Aztec sites, that have always fascinated me. At the moment, I have to wait until my health is back to what it was after a heart attack last year. I would have a problem with jet-lag. :-)

I saw your discussion at my emails,I open to read and even if I fell still dizzy I come to response.
We speak about billions and anything until millions my mind can handle(maybe I 'll have 1 million one day )but when I start read about billions my mind has black out.

Hi Aidonia...are you okay?
Yes my mind can't handle billions either but any substantial company would be worth that much anyway....millionaires are not uncommon these days. It is possible in Sydney for instance to have assets worth more than a million dollars even if you live in a dumpy house in an okay kind of area - $1 M is not alot of money here for a "normal" person to have.

Mexico is not a poor country. They have vast amounts of natural resources.
They have a vibrant tourism sector.
The problem is that they are basically corrupt.
The gap between the rich and the poor is as wide as it is anywhere in the world.
The rich don't want to share the wealth and would rather illegals enter the United States illegally and then send billions of dollars back to Mexico.

That's so rich. I will be very happy if I can have a bit of it:) I hope these richest men could find truly happy in lives. Although money can't buy many things, but at least having money can have a comfortable life. If possible, it's good to donate a little for the poors, the patients and the children who can't afford to school.

Well, I am so jealous of them all. I am still struggling to make ends meet. I hope someday, I will have enough to survive and maybe be rich someday.

Hello Urbangirl,
Yes, I read this as well. The first question that popped into my mind was: Is Mr. Slim as philanthropic as Bill and Melinda Gates are?
Bill Gates announed some years ago, that when one has a 10 figure portfolio, that security is no longer a personal issue. And, that it is time to put that kind of fortune to work helping others.
I wonder if Mr. Slim feels the same? Perhaps another MyLotter has a better understanding of Mr. Slim's charitable leanings.

Hi Ladyluna - yes I wondered about his philanthropic activities too. I read he did not really keep up with how much money he is worth, because to him it's not that important. So...I wouldn't be surprised if he is focussed on other more important things.

Maybe he is related to all the illegals here in the US who send all their American illegally earned dollars back to Mexico.
