Are you scared of the dentist?

I only ask this question because my partner, who is pretty tough and normally doesn't let anything phase him, has one huge fear! He is mortally terrified of going to the dentist, and even though he does go regularly, he ends up being a nervous wreck for days beforehand. He says he can't really explain it - it's just the "idea" of the drill getting near to him!! So how about you? Are you scared of the dentist? If so - why? And - if not - what are YOU scared of?

Oh my goodness, rosie. You are talking to a bunny who has a degree of Dental medicine under her belt, LOL. I love to drilll, anesthesizzzee and extraccct teeth, LOL. My answer to your question: a big NO.
Seriously, I have come across a lot of posters here who has this fear for dentist. I even tried to come up with my ow term for it...dentolophobia. Your partner may have developed this fear when he was still a child. There is always an explanation for our unexplained fear. It may be related to a past traumatic incident too.

LOL! Then perhaps Bunny would consider moving to London and becoming his own personal dentist!? I'm sure he would learn to trust you! And you are probably right about the childhood thing - I am terrfied of thunder storms, and that comes from my late Mother, - so all phobias and fears can be traced back to childhood somewhere I think. Thanks for your answer.

when i read your post, it was funny that i had to mull it over before i could decide if i was afraid or not of the dentist. to be honest, i've not been to the dentist since i was a kid. and i'm 30-something now. i guess it's not that i'm afraid to go but i've had no reason to go for the last 20 years. guess i'm one of the lucky people who always had healthy teeth. although i must admit, i do need cleaning now coz my teeth are kinda yellowish already. come to think of it, i should go visit, right? .......... now it gives me the creeps....

Cluck...cluck..cluck...cluck (Pyewacket does her imitation of a chicken clucking)LOL
Lets just put it this way....I'm not fond of going to a dentist and to be honest I haven't been one in years--actually I really do need to go to one, but it's been hard to find a good one near me that also uses sweet air...many dentists don't now. My old dentist did...he give me the shots of novacaine and the sweet air--when he retired I did start going to another dentist--he didn't use sweet air and found out the hard way, I have an adverse reaction to too much novacaine...it triggered off panic attacks in me--so still trying to find a dentist who uses the sweet air as well..seemed to tone down the bad effects I got with novacaine
My one great "thing" about dentists is not so much the drill or anything like that..just feeling strapped into that chair...Yikes--somehow feel trapped

LOL! That was a good chicken impression! I'm not sure what you mean by "sweet air" - I guess we just call it something else here - but if it kills the pain, then it must be a good thing, so I hope you find a new dentist who uses it. Thanks for your answer.

I don't mind or fear going to dentist but the only thing that is difficult for me is keeping my mouth wide open even though they lock it before perfoming any treatment. I get pain in my jaw by keeping my mouth wide open for a longer time. So before an appointment with dentist, I always do some jaw exercise so that it won't hurt me too much.

oh my god...the dentist!! my biggest fear of all time!! Oh I do go but let me tell you this...I lose sleep, get sick to my stomach and have panic attacks like you would not believe!! None of my girls ever knew this about me growing up and they all love the dentist.
I grew up in a time where a visit to the dentist always held the potential for pain. A mere cleaning was a painful ordeal and oh my god...a filling?
Times have changed and dentistry is much more sensitive to the patient's comfort. I had a root canal a few years back that was totally painless...I nearly fell asleep!
Still, no matter how much I do know that dentistry is gentle and painless these days, I still get very uptight.
I request and pay for out of pocket, anesthesia even for cleanings. It is worth it. I budget and save to make sure that I get my dental care. As scared as I am of the dentist I am more afraid of not going. I could not bear to lose my teeth!!

I already shook that fear I have from dentists, I already got used to it!;)
I have some tooth extractions before, mostly on my jaw. Which I can really say is very painful, especially when the anesthetics haven't worked out yet!;) But it's really nice, I'm pretty sure that he'll get used to it.LoL
I think nowadays, extractions are not that advisable anymore. There are more ways to preserve our teeth, so make him go to the dentist and let his teeth cleaned to wear that happy smile!;)

I'm not scared. I have had so much dental and orthodontic work done, that I actually get sleepy in the dentists chair. I have had braces twice in my life and gone through all kinds of procedures and corrections to get straight teeth. So to the dentist I laugh and say I have NO FEAR!! :_D

Funny you should ask because this Tuesday I am going back to the dentist and he is going to start pulling out teeth and replacing them. I am terrified. Mostly because I have a very low pain threshhold, and I am also afraid of something happening in the chair, as I am type A already and I worry that the stress may cause me a heart attack or something. Sounds nuts I know, but I am so scared right now I have not been able to sleep either.

actually,i'm not-though i know other people who are.i've had the same dentist i had since childhood,i trust him so there's no fear.
i'm actually more nervous of new doctors in general.
you never know if they're going to be good ones or the "oh,you just have a cold,60 bucks please" type.

well im not afraid but i dont like them.i have had one bad experience and i wanted to strangle the dentist.i had pain for about 3 weeks and i didnt know what the problem was,so i went to the dentist because it was one of my tooth hurt.they took all the exrays and still didnt tell me whats wrong, then he took a scraping tool and started to scrap my teeth to see what it was, well when he hit the one tooth in the back with that darn scraper i wanted to scream,he hit a nervfe because the one wisdom tooth had a huge hole in it.i actually had tears coming out of my eyes and called him a very bad name by accident.it was just a reaction,i didnt mean to say that to him.but he told me that it was ok,and he started to laugh.it was a very bad word too that i said to him lol.so he pulled out the tooth and showed me the hole inside.he told me thats the worse pain somone can have, and he didnt blame me for what i did.

Ouch! I don't blame you for saying the very bad word! I'm sure most people would have done! And I don't think I'll be showing your post to my partner, or he'll probably never go to the dentist again! LOL! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Rosie
And no, I am not scared of dentists but am not fond of them either. Some do ruin your teeth instead of fixing them, so, if I am you - do not piss a dentist off, or you'll be sorry! I had a very bad job done and when I complained he ruined some more teeths of mine too :(

Yes I am this wolfie becomes a real lemming when it comes to the dreaded dentist! I actually (please don't laugh) cross my fingers when I'm lying in that dreaded chair, I had a great dentist who was so sympathetic, gentle and friendly then he retired now I've got this odeous man who has as much compassion as a cold fish but it's NHS and it's cheaper than private, with all the modern technology you'd think they'd update the dreaded drill wouldn't ya! Wanna come and hold my hand, I'm due for a check up next month!

When I did finaly get there he knocked me our- I remember nothing.

Awww - poor baby! When I had my wisdom teeth out it was actually under general anaesthetic in the hospital, so I don't remember a thing about it. Just waking up with a face like a hamster and not being able to eat anything solid for a week:-((

I use to be, well not really scared, I just don't really like people in my space for a long period of time, especially in my mouth. I'm not so bad now, I go to a nice female dentist, and she seems to have smaller hands, so it doesn't seem as bad!

My partner is exactly the same totally terrified. Days before he's appointment he gets very irritable, looses sleep, can't concentrate. I just about have to drag him to his appointment. He can't explain why either. I think it's just the general thought of knowing what goes on at the dentist. Not to mention the sound of those drills.

Yes - my man even hates the sound of a drill because it reminds him of the dentist! LOL! Thanks for your response.
